Mount Union outlasts John Carroll in OT

Nate Jacubec and J.J. Kukura each scored 16 points and Mount Union survived John Carroll’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer, which forced overtime, as the Purple Raiders beat the Blue Streaks, 89-88.
Mount Union (21-6) advance to the Ohio Athletic Conference men’s basketball title game Saturday at top-seeded Marietta (25-2).
Jacubec is a senior guard from Struthers. Kukura is a freshman guard from Alliance. Jacubec split two foul shots with two seconds to play in OT to lift the Purple Raiders.
John Carroll (20-7) was led by senior center Jake Hollinger, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. The Blue Streaks’ Will Starks drilled a 25-footer as the buzzer sounded to force OT.
YSU’s Orosz, Aranda place at championships

Youngstown State freshmen Viktoria Orosz and Madison Aranda finished in the top five in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.
Orosz had a school-record time of 4:53.86 in the event to place third while Aranda clocked in at 4:56.27 to place fifth. The Penguins picked up 30 standings points in the race thanks to the two swimmers.
Orosz was among the top two swimmers most of the race before UIC’s Brie Hines finished strong to win with a conference-record time of 4:50.67 while Milwaukee’s Natalie Johnson was second at 4:52.50.
Howland stadium to undergo renovations
A major effort is underway to renovate and modernize the stadium complex at Howland High School.
In order to assist this project, the Cafaro Foundation will make a major donation to the Howland Community Stadium Foundation. Community leaders and other interested citizens are invited to attend a conference on Thursday, March 5 at noon. It will be held at Center Court at Eastwood Mall.
600 Club singles bowling tournament
The Youngstown-Salem 600 Club Single’s Tournament will be held at Boardman Lanes on Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m.

Canfield softball team to host youth clinic
The Canfield High School softball clinic is set for Saturday, March 14 at Canfield High School.
The cost is $30. Players ages 7-10 will participate from 10 a.m. to noon. Those ages 11-14 will participate from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Call 330-506-1656 for more information.
Niles to host its annual Ides of March 5k race
The Niles McKinley Cross Country and Track Boosters will host its annual Ides of March 5K race and 1 mile fun run/walk on Sunday, March 15.
The race will be held at Niles McKinley High School, 616 Dragon Drive, Niles. The 1-mile walk/fun run begins at 8:45 a.m., while the 5K race begins at 9 a.m. Early registration is available until March 8 for $15. Ther will be a $20 fee the day of the race. 23rd annual senior bowling tournament
The Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s 23rd annual Senior Tournament is set for March 21-22 at Holiday Bowl at 777 Youngstown-Poland Rd. in Struthers.
Bowlers can compete either day. There will be five divisions: Class AA (77 and older), Class A (70-76), Class B (65-69), Class C (60-64) and Class D (55-59). The cost is $17. Entries close on March 14. Entries are available at Holiday Bowl. Call Betty Kana at 330-540-4644 for more information.
