Mexican national faces 2 charges

CLEVELAND

A federal grand jury has returned a two-count indictment charging Ricardo Garcia-Baltazar, aka Richard Molina, 37, of Youngstown, with representing himself as a U.S. citizen, when he is not, and with aggravated identity theft, the U.S. attorney said Thursday.

The first count alleges that on or about Jan. 17, 2013, Garcia-Baltazar, a citizen of Mexico and an alien in the United States, falsely represented himself to be a U.S. citizen.

The second count alleges that between Jan. 17 and March 8, 2013, Garcia-Baltazar transferred, possessed and used, without lawful authority, identification of another person, knowing that the identification belonged to another person.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations.

Arrested on warrant

BOARDMAN

Township police arrested a Girard man Wednesday on a warrant out of Florida.

Michael Mauro, 25, faces a third-degree felony charge of grand theft in that state.

According to a police report, in January 2014, Mauro took the key to a relative’s storage unit in Broward County, Fla., and took items out of the unit. Mauro then reportedly tried to sell some of the items, including jewelry and pills.

According to a police report, Mauro originally is from Florida.

Boardman police detained Mauro outside of a business on U.S. Route 224 after they stopped to talk to him because he was sitting with his legs extended into the busy road. He is in the Mahoning County jail.

Student recognition event at Lordstown

LORDSTOWN

Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel will attend a recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. today to celebrate the achievements of Lordstown High School students.

Among them are MacKenzie Guthrie, who has been named a National Merit Scholar finalist.

State Rep. Sean O’Brien of Bazetta, D-63rd, also will attend the program, which will take place in the high school’s Crawford Auditorium. The program will take place regardless of whether school is canceled due to inclement weather.

Man faces additional robbery charge

AUSTINTOWN

A Youngstown man arrested this week on a charge of aggravated robbery after law-enforcement officials said he robbed a Huntington bank in Boardman on Jan. 9 faces another aggravated- robbery charge, a first-degree felony, in Austintown.

Court records show that charges for an Austintown robbery were filed Wednesday against G. Shannon McColor, 26, of Woodcrest Avenue. The Austintown robbery took place Jan. 26, according to court records. Court records also show he faces a burglary charge from last year.

He was arraigned on the second aggravated-robbery charge in Mahoning County Area Court here Wednesday. He was arraigned for the Boardman offense Tuesday.

He has hearings in Mahoning County Area courts in both townships next week. He is in the Mahoning County jail.

Milton Twp. trustees terminate officer

LAKE MILTON

Milton Township trustees voted Tuesday to terminate officer Dan Tickerhoof immediately, reports 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Trustees and the police chief are not discussing the specific reason behind Tickerhoof’s firing. But the chief began looking into concerns that Tickerhoof was spending too much time, both on duty and off duty, with some high school girls while he was an officer in the community of Canal Fulton.

As a result of that investigation, Tickerhoof agreed to a 14-day suspension for unprofessional conduct and poor judgment. Months later, Tickerhoof resigned from that department. Tickerhoof has not been charged with any crime and had no comment Tuesday.

School applications

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Community School, 50 Essex St., a kindergarten- through sixth-grade public charter school, will be taking applications for the 2015-16 school year from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

New Freedom Baptist Church, 1590 Tod Ave., will sponsor a Black History Month program from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Photos and other information will be displayed. Children will deliver excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King speeches.
