Austintown Fitch High School participated in the national Teens for Jeans campaign on Jan. 21 as part of the school’s Creative Arts Night.
Fitch senior Alexis Edwards and Fitch life literary and English teacher Steven Ward organized the drive for the Teens for Jeans organization.
“Teens for Jeans is an organization started by [clothing company] Aeropostale and dosomething.org,” Edwards said. “We collect jeans for homeless teens and youth that are runaways. One thing that they always ask for is a new pair of jeans. We collect jeans every year for the teens.”
Edwards said jeans would also be accepted on Jan. 22. They would then be taken by Ward to a local Aeropostale location to be distributed to the Teens for Jeans organization.
Edwards said 60 pairs of jeans had been collected to that point, with a goal of more than 100 pairs.
“That’s a good goal. Hopefully we can reach that,” she said.
Teens for Jeans seeks to help the 1.5 million teens and children that are homeless or are runaways. The organization said the one item teens ask for when they enter a shelter is a pair of jeans.
Edwards said she wanted to get involved with Teens for Jeans because she felt it was the right thing to do and she enjoys helping people.
“I wanted to because I believe in helping people,” she said. “You can just go through your closet and get an extra pair of jeans. You don’t need 15 pairs of jeans. I think donating a pair of jeans to somebody that actually needs them is something that’s unselfish and something that we can all do.”
