Tri-Gold ABWA to meet

The Tri-Gold Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet on March 11 at A La. Carte Catering in Canfield. The event will begin with social hour at 5:30 p.m and dinner at 6 p.m. The price is $19 and the buffet will consist of baked white fish, stuffed shells, Swiss chicken, sandtrap potato, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, relish tray, rolls and butter, and coffee or tea. Dessert will be pistactio delight. The speaker for the evening will be Ken David on the Topic of The American Veteran. The Crowning of The Chapters 2015-2016 Women of The Year will take place. Gathering Place event to be March 9

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 North Broad Street in Canfield, will host a Gathering Place Senior Day event on March 9 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be a potluck lunch and attendees are asked to bring food to share. The Gospel of John performance

Canfield Presbyterian Church will be offering a live performance of The Gospel of John on March 25. Hors d’oeuvres will be at 5:30 p.m. and the performance will start at 6:15 p.m. There will be no admission, but a love offering will be taken. Ages 10 and up are invited to watch the performance. There will be Lent activities for ages 4-9 and nursery care for ages birth up to 3-years-old.

Gebacz to be honored

The Canfield Local School District has announced that eleventh-grader Madeleine Gebacz has won an award in the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers with her submission for The Scholastic Writing Awards of 2015. The Scholastic Awards recognize the creative efforts of students in grades 7–12, providing opportunities for exhibition, recognition, publication and scholarships. A reception will take place on March 16 at 7 p.m. on Kent State University’s KIVA Center to honor the winners.

Drive through chicken dinner to be March 5

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, is have a drive through chicken dinner on March 5 from 4 p.m. until sold out. The cost $8 each. The menu will include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Bowland named to Dean’s List

Dylan Bowald of Canfield made the Dean’s List for the fall 2014-2015 semester at RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. Bowland is a second-year student in the software engineering program.

Degree-seeking undergraduate students are eligible for Dean’s List if their term GPA is greater than or equal to 3.400,they do not have any grades of “Incomplete”, “D” or “F” and they have registered for, and completed, at least 12 credit hours.

Art sale

BPJWL celebrates 35 years

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The league was established in 1979 and federated in 1980.

Throughout the last 35 years BPJWL has raised more than $650,000 and donated it back to the local community. There will be a banquet on May 4 at Michael Alberinini’s in Boardman. The league would like to invite anyone who is a charter member, past president or past member to join in the celebration. BPJWL to meet March 2

The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will be on March 2 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members will be finalizing plans for the upcoming Quarter Auction on March 21 at St. Nicholas Social Hall at 6 p.m. Members can wear green in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day and to welcome Spring. Hostesses for the meeting are Sperry Rongone and Derrie Wilkes. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Art sale

The YWCA of Youngstown will host an art sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 14 and 15 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. This is an opportunity for artists to sell their artwork and for members of the community to purchase original art. The cost for artists is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Nomination accepted for Children’s Advocate Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Children’s Advocate Awards presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The purpose of these awards is to recognize individuals and organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley who exhibit the spirit of caring and who work to make a difference in the lives of the children of the communities we serve. Honorees will be recognized at the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley “Champions for our Valley’s Children” Celebration Dinner on May 12 at The Lake Club. Consider nominating a special individual, group or organization for the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Children’s Advocate Award. The deadline for submission is March 16. Blood pressure check

There will be a blood pressure check at the MetroParks Farm library by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on March 17 from 1-2 p.m.

Gotta Move Story Time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the MetroParks Farm library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children should both be ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play at 10 a.m. on March 3, 17 and 31.

Fun Time for 4s and 5s

Join the MetroParks Farm library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader on March 10 and 24 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the MetroParks Farm library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Wednesday in March. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with Babies and Books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the MetroParks Farm library 10 a.m. on March 16. The event will offer twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Senior lunch in April

Lord of Life church in Canfield would like to invite all senior citizens to a lunch special on April 13. A lunch will take place on the second Monday of every month at 11 a.m. The lunch is free and donations are optional. There will be blood pressure screenings offered to all seniors and a presentation of spring gardening highlighting gardening issues and tips. This is a community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens with different games and activities offered each month. Spread the word and bring your friends. Senior pot luck event in March

Lord of Life Church in Canfield would like to welcome all senior citizens to a Pot Luck at 11 a.m. on March 9. Lunch attendees are asked to bring food to be shared. This is a free community outreach social program to all senior citizens. This event is offered on the second Monday of every month with different games and activities offered each time. There will also be a physical therapist to present a program addressing senior agility and mobility as well as giving appropriate instructions and suggestions to help all seniors. Easter egg hunt

An Easter egg hunt will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 North Broad Street in Canfield, on April 4 beginning at 10 a.m. All ages from infant through age 12 are welcome. The children are to bring a basket in which they will place the eggs that they find. The Easter Bunny is sure to make a guest appearance. The event will go forward rain or shine. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). 10th annual tasting fundraiser

The Youngstown Area Grocers Association will host its 10th Annual Beer and Wine Tasting fundraiser on March 20 from 6-9 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, located at 1000 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown. Tickets are $50 each or $400 for a reserved table of eight. Guests will have the opportunity to sample more than 100 wines and 50 microbrews, enjoy gourmet food and live entertainment. There also will be silent and Chinese auctions, as well as a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry in Youngstown and the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell, Pa. Chili Cookoff

The missions committee from Western Reserve United Methodist Church will be hosting a chili cook off that will take place on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Cost is $5 a person and includes chili, hot dogs, snacks, beverages and dessert. Pictures will be shown of past youth mission trips and there will also be a game night with board games. This event is open to the community. Second annual community Austim and Disability fair

The Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning Valley office, is seeking autism service providers to participate in its second Annual Community Autism and Disability Resource Fair on March 22 from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Service providers will have the opportunity to provide participants information about autism and disability services and their organizations in the area and NE Ohio region. Free Tax Filing Link and Assistance

The YWCA of Youngstown is offering a self-serve link to file taxes for free. Also being offered are free tax workshops and free tax filing assistance. The self-serve link is available on the YWCA website at ywca.org/youngstown. To file taxes through this link, users must have a household income under $65,000 if single and $95,000 if married. Also needed are the user’s social security number, W2’s, 1099’s, 1098’s, information about other income, deduction and credit information (such as child care expenses, tuition, bills and union dues) and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. For free tax filing assistance, walk-ins will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. March 6 and 20, and April 10 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. YWCA Dance-a-thon

The YWCA of Youngstown is seeking participants for a Dance-a-thon to take place from 4-9 p.m. on March 7 at the YWCA of Youngstown, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. Two people or more may form a team. Also needed are dance groups interested in performing. Individuals and spectators are welcome. The cost is $15 per person for team captain and members, $20 for individuals and $8 for spectators. Team captains must be age 18 or older. The event is open to those age 8 and older. Included in the event are door prizes, themed music, prizes, Dance-a-thon T-shirts, goodie bags, refreshments, a best dressed team prize and basket raffles. Canfield Local Schools Welcomes Newest Cardinals

The Canfield Local School District will be holding kindergarten registration for the 2015/2016 school year for students residing in the Canfield Local School District at C.H. Campbell on April 14, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. and at Hilltop on April 21, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. New students in grades 1 through 4 are welcome to register at this time as well. Students who are currently attending kindergarten in Canfield do not need to re-register for first grade. The child must be a resident of the Canfield Local School District. Children entering kindergarten must have attained the age of five on or before September 30, 2015. Children entering first grade must have attained the age of six on or before September 30, 2015 and must have completed a successful year in kindergarten. The child’s original birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration. The child’s original social security card must be presented at the time of registration. Proof of residence must be presented at the time of registration, i.e. driver’s license and one of the following: purchase agreement for home, rental agreement for apartment, or gas or electric bill with residential address.

Divorce decree and/or proof of custody (if applicable) must be presented at the time of registration. According to Canfield Local Schools’ Board of Education policy, the immunization records of the students must be presented to register the student for kindergarten. The records must be from a physician’s office or a health clinic.

MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2015-2016

Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2015-2016 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 22 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Wintertime tea

Twice-Loved Book Sale

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host the Twice-Loved Books Sale until March 1 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Peruse the tables in the Antonucci Horticulture Library for much loved books on gardening, cooking and nature. There will also be magazines for sale. Donations of related used books are appreciated at any time. All proceeds will benefit the Antonucci Horticulture Library.

The Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring hours

Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, has new winter and spring hours starting in January. The restaurant will be open for dine in or carryout from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Open dates are March 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and 31; and April 1 and 2. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting.
