“Recipes of Youngstown” comes back for seconds

The group that published “Recipes of Youngstown,” a cookbook with a mission to preserve Mahoning Valley memories, announces it has come out with a second volume.

Proceeds from the first book totaled more than $75,000, which was earmarked for the restoration of Lanterman’s Mill in Mill Creek MetroParks. Proceeds of $50,000 from the sale of the second cookbook be donated to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and will fund the new catering kitchen at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 W. Federal St. The remaining money will be set aside for maintaining the kitchen equipment.

The historical society preserves the history of the people of the Valley. The cookbook fits in well with the society’s mission, allowing it to save and honor memories of the people, places, events, traditions and recipes that make up the fabric of the Valley’s population.

If the book is pre-ordered by Saturday, the buyer is guaranteed a copy from the first printing, which will be available from mid- to late April. The historical society was established in 1875 and will mark its 140th anniversary this year. The “Recipes of Youngstown” cookbook gives the society a new way to reach out to the community while preserving its past.

The recipes group, in pledging $50,000 to the Tyler kitchen, gets naming rights. The group will share its love of cooking and community pride beginning May 2, when it will host “A Taste ... and a Memory” from noon to 4 p.m. at the Tyler History Center.

The community is invited, for a $5 donation, to taste samples from the second cookbook. Funds will be used toward the kitchen pledge.
