Snow, cold leave northeast Ohio communities short on salt

CLEVELAND (AP) — Communities in northeast Ohio say they’re running short on road salt amid this winter’s snow and cold temperatures.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group reports some cities like Chagrin Falls and North Ridgeville have waited weeks for hundreds of tons of ordered salt.

The region has recorded nearly 60 inches of snow since November, and the colder-than average temperatures have made snow harder to melt and roads more difficult to clear.

Some cities are implementing alternative plans as they wait for salt deliveries. WEWS-TV reports the city of Green has started pre-treating roads with brine and spreading salt only at intersections, on hills and on curves.

A Cargill Salt spokesman tells the station the supplier is working to prioritize and deliver salt where it can do the most good.
