Poland schools plan cuts one elementary school, North building

POLAND

The school board has unanimously voted to approve what it calls a "redistricting" plan for the school district, which will include the elimination of one of the district's four elementary schools.

Effective beginning the 2015-2016 school year, North Elementary will cease to operate as an elementary school and instead will be used for preschool and after school programs.

All kindergarten, first-grade and second-grade students and staff will move to Union Elementary, which currently is a K-4 school. The other K-4 school, Union, will house third and fourth-grade students and staff.

No changes will be made to McKinley Elementary, the middle school or the high school next year. In the future, McKinley also will cease to operate as an elementary school.

The redistricting plan is a response to a steep decline in enrollment in Poland Local Schools over the past several years and in future enrollment projections.
