YSU’s McLean runs second-fastest mile

Youngstown State junior distance runner Austin McLean posted the second-fastest indoor mile run in the Alex Wilson Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

McLean finished fourth in the race, clocking in at 4:08.59, in the second heat of the mile run. McLean was just 2.5 seconds behind the winner, Bradley’s Michael Ward.

McLean, who’s previous-best time was 4:12.62, improved his time by four seconds. He is now second in school history behind Kurt Michaelis’ school-record 4:02.71 — set in 2003 at the Alex Wilson Invitational.

The Penguins will host the Horizon League Championships next weekend. Events are set for Saturday and Sunday at the WATTS.

YSU baseball tickets vs. Ohio St. on sale Monday

Tickets for the Youngstown State baseball team’s game against Ohio State on May 12 at Eastwood Field will go on sale Monday.

Fans can purchase tickets at both the YSU athletic ticket office in Stambaugh Stadium and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers box office at Eastwood Field. All tickets are $8 and will be general admission.

YSU students will receive free admission with a valid student ID, and Penguin Club members can redeem one free ticket per membership card.

Mettille leads Mount Union at Buckeye meet

COLUMBUS

Mount Union’s men’s indoor track and field team, ranked No. 4 in the nation in NCAA Division III, placed second as a team in the Buckeye Tune-Up at Ohio State University on Friday.

The Purple Raiders’ 82.5 points placed them in second behind the Buckeyes’ 142 points.

Senior Tyler Mettille (Canfield), who ran the best time in NCAA Division III this year, won the 400-meter race with a time of 48.76.

Junior Andrew Milhoan set a new school record, and posted the sixth-best time in NCAA Division III, winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.15.

Mettille was also on the 4x400 meter relay team with freshman Tyler Neff, junior Tyler Sparks and senior Chase Swisher, which placed third and ran the second best time in NCAA Division III this season at 3:17.20.

Tony Schumacher No. 1 in Top Fuel qualifying

CHANDLER, Ariz.

Top Fuel season champion Tony Schumacher raced to the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday in the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.

Schumacher claimed a category-best 77th No. 1 qualifying position, powering his dragster to a track record time of 3.722 seconds at 325.61 mph during Friday’s second session. He also had one of the quickest dragsters during Saturday’s two sessions, posting a pair of low 3.7-second runs.

Matt Hagan topped the Funny Car field, and Erica Enders-Stevens was the fastest in Pro Stock. Hagan, the defending season champion, powered his Dodge Charger to a track-record time of 3.978 at 320.28 mph. He’s coming off a victory in the season-opening event in Pomona, California.

In Pro Stock, Enders-Stevens earned her 14th career No. 1 and second of the season with her Friday best of 6.545 at 211.20 in a Chevy Camaro.
