Bailey, Miller earn bronze at district swim meet

Boardman senior Brooke Bailey placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke to help the Spartans finish an area-best 10th out of 31 teams at Saturday’s Division I district swim meet at Cleveland State University.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for next week’s state meet. Other state qualifiers will be announced today.

Bailey broke her own school record in the 100 breast (1:05.35) and joined Corie Kuras, Logan Mitchell and Amanda Moss on the Spartans’ eighth-place 200 free relay. Boardman’s 200 medley relay of Bailey, Sarah Gonda, Kuras and Moss placed ninth.

Bailey finished ninth in the 100 butterfly, Kuras placed 10th in the 50 free and 24th in the 100 free, Gonda placed 15th in the 100 back and 30th in the 200 IM and Moss finished 23rd in the 50 free.

Canfield senior Sarah Heaven broke a school record in the 100 backstroke (1:00.36) in finishing 13th. She also placed 12th in the 200 IM and joined Theresa Mikolay, Maggie Beistel and Rachel Williams on the 14th-place 200 medley relay.

Mikolay broke the school record in the 100 breast, finishing 20th with a time of 1:08.46. She also took 28th in the 100 fly. Beistel was 37th in the 100 back and 38th in the 100 free.

Howland senior Aimee Gysegem placed seventh in the 500 free and 13th in the 200 free. Warren Harding senior Emily Thirion placed ninth in the 100 breast but was disqualified for a false start in the 50 free.

In boys competition, Harding’s Michael Miller placed third in the 50 free and joined Nathan Marchek, Justyn Morgan and Dylan Thirion on the Raiders’ third-place 200 free relay.

Harding finished a Valley-best ninth out of 34 teams.

Miller also took 12th in the 100 fly. Thirion placed fourth in the 100 free and was sixth in the 50 free. Marchek placed 14th in the 100 free. In the 400 free relay, Marchek, Miller, Quentin Stokes and Thirion placed ninth.

Boardman’s Aaron DunLany took sixth in the 500 free in a school record time of 1:46.80. He was 11th in 200 free. DunLany, Tyler Calpin, Callen Aulizia and Kyle Kimerer finished 10th in the 400 free relay, while DunLany, Aulizia, Ethan Schwendeman and Kimerer placed 12th in the 200 free relay.

Schwendeman, Calpin, Andrew O’Nesti and David Zaitzew placed 20th in the 200 medley relay. Kimerer was 13th in the 200 free and 17th in the 100 fly. Aulizia was 14th in the 50 free and 24th in the 100 free.

Fitch sophomore Timothy Kuback placed ninth in the 100 fly and 12th in the 100 back.
