Play festival at theater seeks works
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Local playwrights are invited to submit their plays to the Youngstown Playhouse’s Voices of the Valley New One-Act Play Festival.
The annual festival, now in its fourth year, connects playwrights with directors and actors and provides them an opportunity to bring their work to the stage.
The deadline to submit a play is May 31. Information on applying can be found at theyoungstownplayhouse.com. There is a $10 non-refundable submission fee, and each interested author may submit only one work. For information, call 330-788-8739.
Participating writers will have a voice in the creation of a performance-ready piece as they establish a creative team to discuss, rehearse and produce a staged reading. There also is a category for writers between grades seven and 12.
The panel of writers and directors chosen to select and stage this year’s new plays include writer/director James Canacci, writer/director Pat Foltz and playwright Dylan White.
They will select as many as three plays to be rehearsed during a four-week workshop and performed as stage readings July 31 and Aug.1 and 2 in the Moyer Room of the Playhouse. Auditions will be scheduled in early June for actors.
Plays that have been selected in the past include “By The Book” by Elizabeth Hill, “Rain Delay” by Cheryl Lilko Games, “Through a Broken Window” by Brandon Martin, “The Kissing Bandit” and “The Crossing” by Stephen Sniderman, “Arriving at Bessie” by Kelly Bancroft and “Hold That Thought” by Michael J. Hill.
