Brady helps Cards to fifth-place finish

CLEVELAND

Canfield senior Connor Brady finished in the top five in four events to help the Cardinals finish fifth out of 29 teams in Friday’s Division II district swim meet at Cleveland State University.

Brady finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.55 to automatically qualify for next week’s state meet. He also placed third in the 100 butterfly (51.55) and joined Kyle Anderson, Matthew Bogen and Ben Brucoli on the second-place 200 medley relay, which finished in 1:38.89.

The top two placers in each event automatically advance to the state meet, while the other state qualifiers will be determined by statewide times. Brady, Bogen and Brucoli joined Alec Gaetano on the fifth-place 400 free relay.

Anderson set a school record in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.54, finishing sixth. Anderson also placed fourth in the 200 IM.

Brucoli was sixth in the 100 free and joined Cullen Brady, Kamran Sarac and Anderson on the seventh-place 200 free relay.

Bogen was ninth in the 100 breast and 21st in the 100 free.

Brucoli placed 11th in the 50 free, while Gaetano was 10th in the 100 fly and 11th in the 200 free.

Other Canfield finishers include: Cullen Brady (18th in the 100 back and 19th in the 200 free), Sarac (18th in 100 fly, 20th in 100 breast), Jared Rothbauer (22nd in 200 IM, 28th in 100 back) and Lake Bennett (24th in 100 breast, 25th in 200 IM).

Poland’s David Robich, Anthony Lattanzio, Colin Barrett and Dominic Lattanzio placed 15th in the 200 medley relay. Anthony Lattanzio was 12th in the 100 breast, Robich placed 25th in the 200 free and the 500 free and Dominic Lattanzio placed 30th in the 50 free and the 100 free.

Hubbard’s Alex Fox placed 21st in the 500 free and 23rd in the 200 free and Robbie Dixon was 25th in the 50 free and 27th in the 100 free. Fox and Dixon joined Tler Rich and Hunter Herzberger on the 12th-place 400 free relay.

GIRLS

Youngstown Christian senior Jessica Morrow was fifth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 breast as the Eagles placed an area-best 18th out of 29 teams. Teammate Tess Emerson placed 20th in the 100 back and 28th in the 50 free.

Poland’s Madeline Evan, Avery Blasko, Logan Kountz and Gina Ungaro placed 10th in the 400 free relay. Evan, Blasko, Marissa Melillo and Ungaro placed 13th in the 200 free and Kaelyn Weitzman, Melillo, Kountz and Jennifer Eich placed 19th in the 200 medley relay.

Evan was 16th in both the 100 fly and the 100 back, Ungaro placed 26th in the 100 free and 27th in the 200 free, Melillo was 29th in the 50 free and Weitzman was 29th in the 100 back Cardinal Mooney’s 200 medley relay of Taylor Tofil, Maddie Leek, Mackenzie Hammond and Annie Boniface placed 15th. Hammond, Leek, Nicole Clark and Boniface led the Cardinals to 18th in the 400 free relay. Tofil also took fifth in the 100 fly and 12th in the 100 back. Hammond was 24th in the 100 fly. Boniface placed 24th in the 200 free.

Crestview’s Rebekah Klem placed seventh in the 100 breast and 20th in the 500 free.
