Soap star gets probation, license suspension for Ohio crash


JEFFERSON (AP) — Soap opera actor Freddie Smith has been sentenced to two years of probation and a one-year drivers’ license suspension after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a car crash that seriously injured his girlfriend.

The 26-year-old “Days of Our Lives” actor from Los Angeles lost control of his vehicle Oct. 7 in Ashtabula (ash-tuh-BYOO’-luh) County in northeast Ohio. He pleaded guilty in December to felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Twenty-seven-year-old actress Alyssa Tabit of North Hollywood, California, was seriously hurt but is recovering.

The Star-Beacon in Ashtabula reports (http://bit.ly/1BugSUy ) Smith apologized for his actions in court Wednesday.

Smith must also pay nearly $1,400 in fines, attend a driver’s intervention program and speak at every Ashtabula County high school about the dangers of drinking and driving.
