Police seize dog from Campbell man for neglect

Staff report

CAMPBELL

Police responded to a complaint of animal cruelty at a residence on Gladstone Street on Wednesday evening.

Campbell Police Chief Drew Rauzan observed a white dog with a heavy chain used to tether the dog to a dog house in the rear yard of the home.

A police report states that the dog had sores and was missing hair on its body. There was no visible sign of water, and the food bowl was frozen over with snow and ice.

“It is unlawful and generally reprehensible to leave a dog tied outside to a 5-foot chain in 10-degree Fahrenheit temperatures,” Rauzan said.

The dog was handed over to humane agents. Neighbors also provided statements about the animal treatment, according to the report.

The dog owner, William Turner of Campbell, turned himself in on a second- degree misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. He was issued a criminal summons and released pending a court appearance at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

“I strongly urge anyone with knowledge of an animal being neglected ... to contact the police department immediately,” Rauzan said. “Every complaint received will be investigated.”
