BPJWL to meet March 2

The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will be on March 2 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members will be finalizing plans for the upcoming Quarter Auction on March 21 at St. Nicholas Social Hall at 6 p.m. Members can wear green in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day and to welcome Spring. Hostesses for the meeting are Sperry Rongone and Derrie Wilkes. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. BPJWL celebrates 35 years

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The league was established in 1979 and federated in 1980. Throughout the last 35 years BPJWL has raised more than $650,000 and donated it back to the local community. There will be a banquet on May 4 at Michael Alberinini’s in Boardman. The league would like to invite anyone who is a charter member, past president or past member to join in the celebration. The truth about cholestrol

Women Artists art exhibition

The YWCA Women Artists: A Celebration! Annual Art Exhibition showcases works by local, regional and national women artists, age 18 and older. Entry forms are available by calling 330-746-6361, ext. 102 or at ywca.org/youngstown. They are due no later than March 30. Artists may enter a maximum of five entries. There is a nonrefundable fee of $10 per entry or $45 for five entries. Entry is by CD only. This year’s juror is Susan Talbot-Stanaway, former director of the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville. A preview party for the show will take place from 7-9 p.m. on June 20, at the YWCA. Proceeds from the art show benefit the YWCA Housing Programs.

Mardi Gras paws

Celebrate Mardi Gras with Legacy Dog Rescue as they host a Mardi Gras wine taste on Feb. 21 at Lil Paws Winery, located at 17547 Mahoning Ave. in Lake Milton, from 4–10 p.m. Admission is $10 for wine tasting, appetizers, desserts and classic Mardi Gras fare. Art sale

The YWCA of Youngstown will host an art sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 14 and 15 at the YWCA, at 25 W. Rayen Ave. This is an opportunity for artists to sell their artwork and for members of the community to purchase original art. The cost for artists is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Proceeds will benefit the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition purchase of lighting. Tables are limited. Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Children’s Advocate Awards presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The purpose of these awards is to recognize individuals and organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley who exhibit the spirit of caring and who work to make a difference in the lives of the children of the communities we serve. Honorees will be recognized at the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley “Champions for our Valley’s Children” Celebration Dinner on May 12 at The Lake Club. Consider nominating a special individual, group or organization for the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Children’s Advocate Award. The deadline for submission is March 16. Poland Swim Club wine tasting fundraiser

The Poland Swim Club will host its annual wine tasting event on March 6 at the Holy Family Parish Center from 7-11 p.m. This year’s event will showcase award winning wines from Debonne’ Vineyards. Guests will also enjoy gourmet Hors d’oeuvre Stations, DJ and dancing, Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and a chance to win free dues for 2015. The event is open to both members and non-members. Tickets are $50 each and include all wines, beer, food and entertainment. Proceeds will be used for club improvements and beautification. Friends of Poland library meeting

The Friends of the Poland Library will meet on March 3. Coffee hour will be at 9:30 a.m. with the program to follow at 10 a.m. The business meeting to follow the program. Trace Manning of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society will be the speaker. Her topic will be “Un-caged, Extraordinary Women of the American Civil War.” Hostesses for the coffee hour will be Emma Eggleston, Joan Reid, Carol McCoy and Susan Beil. Donations of books, magazines, CD’s and DVD’s are accepted for the book cart. Meetings are open to the public. New members are welcome. Membership dues are $10 per year.

Brooker named to Dean’s List

Madison Brooker of Poland was named to the fall 2014 Dean’s List at The University of Findlay. To earn this achievement, a student must attain a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

All you can eat spaghetti dinner

Join Boy Scout Troop 44 for their 23rd Annual “all you can eat” Spaghetti Dinner on Feb. 22 from 12-5 p.m. in Fellowship Hall at Poland Presbyterian Church, located at 2 Poland Manor in Poland. Prepared and served by the members of the troop, this “all you can eat” spaghetti dinner cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children 12 and under. Carry-out dinners will be available. Simon Roofing welcomes Chantelle Cortes to corporate marketing department

Simon Roofing is announcing the recent hiring of Chantelle Cortes as marketing assistant at its Corporate Headquarters in Boardman. Among other duties, Cortes will be responsible for managing campaign tracking, web analytics and graphic design. Prior to joining Simon Roofing, Cortes worked as a web, catalog and graphic designer. Cortes, a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a degree in Multimedia and Web Design, currently resides in Poland with her two sons and one daughter.

Simon Roofing welcomes Steve Morse as roof analyst

Simon Roofing is announcing the recent hiring of Steve Morse as SR PreVision Roof Analyst at its Corporate Headquarters located in Boardman. Morse will be responsible for roof inspections and analyses for commercial and government facilities. Prior to joining Simon Roofing, Morse worked as Facility Manager for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice. Morse, a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War organizations, currently resides in Poland with his two sons.

Porter named to Dean’s List

Molly Porter from Poland has been named to the callege of Wooster’s Dean’s List for the fall 2014 semester. Porter is a senior at Wooster and a sociology major who achieved a grade point average of 3.65 or above for the fall 2014 semester.

Free tax preparation

The Poland Library will provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. Call the Poland library between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays to schedule an appointment 330-726-2492. Tax preparation will take place on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. through April 13.

History buff presenters

History presenters is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC. Join the Poland library on March 12 at 7 p.m. for author William Johnson who will discuss his new book “Tea and Tyranny: Still Shaggin’ in Boston.” There will be a book-signing to follow the presentation. There will be a business fair at the Poland library from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m on March 28. There is no charge to attend the fair. Poland Library Leprechaun Lollapalooza

Join in the St.Patrick’s Day festivities at the Poland library on March 14. Librarians and Kravitz Delicatessen combine for a day of St. Patrick’s fun for the whole family. Times for events include: 9 a.m. - Kravitz Deli open for breakfast. Menu items available for purchase: corned beef and eggs, St. Patrick’s Day breakfast bagels, corned beef hash; 10:30 a.m. - meet the Leprechaun; 10:45 a.m. - parade of leprechaunas - dress as a leprechaun or in your most festive Saint Patrick’s Day gear and join a parade through the library. Each child who enters the parade will receive an entry for a chance to win a book of Irish fairy tales. Patti’s Night of Pampering to be Feb. 23

There will be a spa night for patients currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation and a guest on Feb. 23 from 6-8 p.m. at Salon@Creekside. The night of pampering will offer spa services as a small donation for guests ($1 - $2 donation per service), giveaways, hand scrubs and massages, wig and hairpiece display, eyebrow and eyelash application, a Livestrong instructor from YMCA and more. Money donated will go toward the Paneraton and the Jonie Abdu Foundation.

Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Learn about species and habitats

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn about the National Audubon Society’s priority species and habitats. This program will be presented by Mandy Smith, the Education Manager at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks and formerly of Audubon Maryland-DC. 10th annual tasting fundraiser

The Youngstown Area Grocers Association will host its 10th Annual Beer and Wine Tasting fundraiser on March 20 from 6-9 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, located at 1000 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown. Tickets are $50 each or $400 for a reserved table of eight. Guests will have the opportunity to sample more than 100 wines and 50 microbrews, enjoy gourmet food and live entertainment. There also will be silent and Chinese auctions, as well as a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry in Youngstown and the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell, Pa. Chili Cookoff

The missions committee from Western Reserve United Methodist Church will be hosting a chili cook off that will take place on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Cost is $5 a person and includes chili, hot dogs, snacks, beverages and dessert. Pictures will be shown of past youth mission trips and there will also be a game night with board games. This event is open to the community. Second annual community Austim and Disability fair

The Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning Valley office, is seeking autism service providers to participate in its second Annual Community Autism and Disability Resource Fair on March 22 from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Service providers will have the opportunity to provide participants information about autism and disability services and their organizations in the area and NE Ohio region. Free Tax Filing Link and Assistance

The YWCA of Youngstown is offering a self-serve link to file taxes for free. Also being offered are free tax workshops and free tax filing assistance. The self-serve link is available on the YWCA website at ywca.org/youngstown. To file taxes through this link, users must have a household income under $65,000 if single and $95,000 if married. Also needed are the user’s social security number, W2’s, 1099’s, 1098’s, information about other income, deduction and credit information (such as child care expenses, tuition, bills and union dues) and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. For free tax filing assistance, walk-ins will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. March 6 and 20, and April 10 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. YWCA Dance-a-thon

The YWCA of Youngstown is seeking participants for a Dance-a-thon to take place from 4-9 p.m. on March 7 at the YWCA of Youngstown, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. Two people or more may form a team. Also needed are dance groups interested in performing. Individuals and spectators are welcome. The cost is $15 per person for team captain and members, $20 for individuals and $8 for spectators. Trim a Tree for February

Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-season tree. This event is open to children of all ages during regular library hours at the Poland library through the month of Feb.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meting

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome and snacks will be provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Academy Award Predictions

Who’s going to win an Oscar? Fill out an Academy Award ballot Feb. 1-21 at the Poland library and the teen with the most correct predictions will win a prize. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 and adults through the month of February.

Sit and Stitch

Teens and adults can sit and stitch with others at the library on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your own quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity.

Finding our family members in uniform

Explore the records of the armed force at the Poland library on Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Learn how to pursue personnel files and unit histories in order to understand your ancestor’s role in defending our nation’s heritage. MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2015-2016

Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2015-2016 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 22 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Wintertime tea

Enjoy some southern charm with a fundraiser for the Antonucci Horiculture library at Fellows Riverside Gardens on March 1 from 2-4 p.m. Treats, entertainment, tea and conversation will be provided. Hats are admired, but not required. Call FRG to register. The cost is $35 per person.

Botany for beginners

Have you ever been stumped by a botanical name? Are you confused by differences between xylem and phloem? If you answered yes to either questions then perhaps a refresher in botany with Mandy Smith on Feb. 25 from 9:30-11 a.m. will help out. The cost $8 to enter and the event will take place at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Cabin fever fest

Bum off the winter blues at Cabin Fever Fest on Feb. 21 from 12-2 p.m. at the Wick Recreation Area. A chili cook-off, outdoor games, sled riding and other activities will be provided. Enter the snow sculpting competition (weather permitting) and participate in winter crafts. Sample chili and vote for your favorite for a small donation. Yoga in the gardens

Enjoy yoga that will help you keep a healthy outlook on Tuesdays and Thursdays in February from 9:30-11 a.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. Bring a mat and a small blanket. The cost is $10 per class and classes will take place at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

T’ai Chi step one in the gardens

Restorative Yoga

Begin the morning with quiet time, restoring the body and nourishing the mind with restorative yoga and journaling with Michelle O’Brien on Feb. 28 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Each class will explore a specific topic to reflect on as you allow yourself to open to the process of relaxation and mindfulness. Bring several blankets, a pillow and a notebook. Hot dog hike

Mary Smith will present a program about the National Audubon Society’s priority species and habitats on Feb. 24 from 7-8 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm. Mary previously had worked for Audubon Maryland-DC.

Heritage gardening seminar

Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Garden Seminar: Heritage Gardening for the 21st Century on Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Discover some of the successful, sustainable, and simple plants from the 18th through early 20th centuries. These tough and adaptable plants represent the foundation of our gardens today. Speakers will look at historic gardening methods that can be applied to our current gardens. Explore the rich heritage of the garden and what it means. The speakers’ books will be available for purchase at the seminar. Twice-Loved Book Sale

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host the Twice-Loved Books Sale Feb. 21 through March 1 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Peruse the tables in the Antonucci Horticulture Library for much loved books on gardening, cooking and nature. There will also be magazines for sale. Donations of related used books are appreciated at any time. All proceeds will benefit the Antonucci Horticulture Library.

The Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring hours

Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, has new winter and spring hours starting in January. The restaurant will be open for dine in or carryout from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Open dates are Feb. 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26; March 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and 31; and April 1 and 2. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. Grab an entry form and look around the Poland library for St. Patrick’s Day themed pictures. Find eight in total each with a letter underneath. Copy down the letters and unscramble them to discover a St. Patrick’s Day related word. All completed entry forms with the correct word will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a prize. One entry per person. For teens in grades 7-12 during normal library hours through the month of March.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) Meeting

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting at the Poland Library. Help plan and support teen activities being held at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. For teens in grades 7-12 at 6:30 p.m. on March 25.

Decorate an ornament for our all-seasons tree. For children of all ages at the Poland Library during regular library hours in the month of March.

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at Poland Library. Legos will be provided. For ages 4-7 on March 19 at 1-2:00 p.m.

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at Poland Library. Legos will be provided. For kids, ages 6 and up at 6-7:00 p.m. on March 24.

International day of puppetry

Help Poland Library celebrate with a shadow puppet show. Stay after the performance to make your own shadow puppets and learn how to make a shadow puppet theatre. For children of all ages at 6:00 p.m. on March 31.

Lunch with Beverly Lewis

Author Beverly Lewis will be at the Poland Library March 25 for lunch and a book signing, where she will speak about her new book, “The Love Letters.” Doors will open at noon. Lunch at 12:30 p.m. with a presentation by the author. Ticket Price $25 for members of the Literary Society and $35 for non-members. Books will be available to purchase.

Bonding with babies & books

For caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months. Twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult at Poland Library 10:00 a.m. March 4, 11, 18, 25.

Gotta Move Story Time!

For children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Poland Library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and kids, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play at 6:30 p.m. on March 30.
