Ohio college apologizes for Black History Month menu

FAIRBORN, Ohio (AP) — The president of a southwest Ohio college and its dining services vendor have apologized for a Black History Month menu that some found offensive.

The menu screens at Wright State University offered fried chicken, mashed potatoes, collard greens and cornbread under photos of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and other black leaders. The Dayton Daily News reports that people circulated images on social media calling it offensive and disrespectful.

Wright State president David Hopkins sent an email Thursday asserting the university’s commitment to diversity.

He apologized for the display and pledged to find out more and how to prevent something similar from happening again.

Chartwells Higher Education Dining Service says it could have done a better job providing context for what was meant as “a cultural dining experience.”
