Lowellville Schools: Student achievement improves over 10-year period

Staff report

LOWELLVILLE

Open-enrollment and resident students both do well at Lowellville schools, a school official said.

Superintendent Geno Thomas cited a recent study on open-enrollment students, who live in other neighboring districts of Mahoning County.

Open-enrollment students “were performing just as well as students living in the district,” he said.

The 10-year study found that open enrollment does not have an impact on student achievement countywide. Thomas said the data show student achievement for both types of students climbing upward at Lowellville schools.

“We are at the top of our game,” he said.

Thomas, who started as superintendent last August, said the success is due to the teachers, staff, families and community. Nearly half the students who attend Lowellville are from other districts.

“They all get treated equally,” he said.

Applications for open enrollment for the 2015-16 school year will be available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2, and will be available through March 31 during regular school days.
