Kasich puts 5% raises for all judges in proposed budget
COLUMBUS
Gov. John Kasich has included pay raises for Ohio Supreme Court justices and other judges in his biennial budget bill.
The provisions came to light this week after the release of an analysis by the state’s Legislative Service Commission of the $72 billion-plus, two-year spending plan.
The 417-page document provides more details of budget legislation that the governor announced earlier this month.
Under judiciary spending, the governor has proposed increasing salaries by 5 percent through 2018.
That would put the annual pay for the Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court at $183,450 as of 2018, up from the 2014 level of $150,850, according to the LSC analysis.
Other proposed salary increases include:
Supreme Court justice, to $172,200 in 2018 from $141,600 in 2014.
Appeals court judge, to $160,500 from $132,000.
Common pleas judge, to $147,600 from $121,350.
Full-time municipal-court judge, to $138,800 from $114,100.
Part-time municipal-court judge and county court judge, to $79,900 from $65,650.
Ohio Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor urged state lawmakers last year to institute judicial pay raises, saying those serving on the bench at the state and local levels have not had increases since 2008.
