BPJWL to meet March 2

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs.

Detwiler named to prestigious lists

Sasha Detwiler of Boardman was named to the President’s List and Dean’s List for the Fall 2014 semester at Youngstown State University. Detwiler is a senior Early Childhood Education major.

The truth about cholestrol

ITT Technical Center will host a free public event by Dr. Dannielle MacDuff from the Phoenix House Wellfare Center about cholestrol. The event will take place on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m.

Women Artists art exhibition

The YWCA Women Artists: A Celebration! Annual Art Exhibition showcases works by local, regional and national women artists, age 18 and older. Entry forms are available by calling 330-746-6361, ext. 102 or at ywca.org/youngstown.

They are due no later than March 30. Artists may enter a maximum of five entries. There is a nonrefundable fee of $10 per entry or $45 for five entries. Entry is by CD only. This year’s juror is Susan Talbot-Stanaway, former director of the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville. A preview party for the show will take

place from 7-9 p.m. on June 20, at the YWCA. Proceeds from the art show benefit the YWCA Housing Programs.

BPJWL celebrates 35 years

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The league was established in 1979 and federated in 1980.

Throughout the last 35 years BPJWL has raised more than $650,000 and donated it back to the local community. There will be a banquet on May 4 at Michael Alberinini’s in Boardman. The league would like to invite anyone who is a charter member, past president or past member to join in the celebration.

Mardi Gras paws

Celebrate Mardi Gras with Legacy Dog Rescue as they host a Mardi Gras wine taste on Feb. 21 at Lil Paws Winery, located at 17547 Mahoning Ave. in Lake Milton, from 4–10 p.m.

Admission is $10 for wine tasting, appetizers, desserts and classic Mardi Gras fare. There will be a prize for best dressed, and a Chinese auction with live music will start at 7 p.m. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue. For more information, contact Paula at 330-720-0470.

Art sale

The YWCA of Youngstown will host an art sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 14 and 15 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. This is an opportunity for artists to sell their artwork and for members of the community to purchase original art. The cost for artists is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Proceeds will benefit the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition purchase of lighting. Tables are limited. Nomination accepted for Children’s Advocate Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Children’s Advocate Awards presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The purpose of these awards is to recognize individuals and organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley who exhibit the spirit of caring and who work to make a difference in the lives of the children of the communities we serve. Honorees will be recognized at the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley “Champions for our Valley’s Children” Celebration Dinner on May 12 at The Lake Club. Consider nominating a special individual, group or organization for the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Children’s Advocate Award. The deadline for submission is March 16. Relay for Life team to host fundraiser

Team Santa’s Cause will be having a fundraiser on March 7 at the Boardman Buffalo Wild Wings in the Southern Park Mall with all proceeds going to the 2015 Boardman Relay For Life. Local student named to Dean’s List

Taunza Haynes from Boardman was named to the College of Business and Entrepreneurship Honor Scholar list at Fort Hays State University fall 2014 semester. Haynes earned a perfect 4.0 and is a freshman majoring in human resource management.

Boardman receives donation from Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley

The Boardman Stadium Project has announced that Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will be the main sponsor of the scoreboard at the new Boardman stadium, scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.

Akron Children’s Hospital was recognized on Feb. 13 at Boardman High School prior to the start of the varsity basketball game. Representatives from Akron Children’s Hospital, as well as the Boardman Boosters and Boardman Local Schools were present. Tax preparation

The Library will provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. The event will take place at the Boardman library on April 8 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Call 330-726-2492 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to schedule an appointment.

Chuck E. Cheese Story Time and library fundraiser

There will be a special story time at 10 a.m. beginning on March 25 before the store opens with Chuck E. Cheese at the Boardman store location. This story time will be on the fourth Wednesday of every month in 2015. Support your public library that day by showing your library card and receive 10 free tokens to play games. The library will receive 15 percent of the purchases made that day at Chuck E. Cheese. Support your Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County by donating gently used and once-read children’s books that day to support children’s programming. Blood pressure screening by MCCTC

There will be a free blood pressure screening by students in the Medical Assistant class at the Adult Career Center, MCCTC at the Boardman library from 9-11 a.m. on March 18.

Rabbit Adoption Open House

Meet adorable bunnies Feb. 7-21 from 12-4 p.m. at F5RS. On site adoptions are possible with approved applications which can be found online at orgsites.com/oh/F5RS. Join them in toy making and make one for take home in addititon in making one for the rescue. Bring your bunny in to be groomed, shop out store, see out scentsy products, learn about Bunnies in Baskets Therapy Rabbits and Find out about training your bunny as a therapy rabbit or working with an F5RS bunny. Ask how to volunteer. There are no animal surrenders.

Patti’s Night of Pampering to be Feb. 23

There will be a spa night for patients currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation and a guest on Feb. 23 from 6-8 p.m. at Salon@Creekside. Registration is required by calling Patricia McSuley at 330-207-7112. The night of pampering will offer spa services as a small donation for guests ($1 - $2 donation per service), giveaways, hand scrubs and massages, wig and hairpiece display, eyebrow and eyelash application, a Livestrong instructor from YMCA and more. Money donated will go toward the Paneraton and the Jonie Abdu Foundation.

Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Learn about species and habitats

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn about the National Audubon Society’s priority species and habitats. This program will be presented by Mandy Smith, the Education Manager at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks and formerly of Audubon Maryland-DC. 10th annual tasting fundraiser

The Youngstown Area Grocers Association will host its 10th Annual Beer and Wine Tasting fundraiser on March 20 from 6-9 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, located at 1000 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown. Tickets are $50 each or $400 for a reserved table of eight. Guests will have the opportunity to sample more than 100 wines and 50 microbrews, enjoy gourmet food and live entertainment. There also will be silent and Chinese auctions, as well as a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds will benefit the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry in Youngstown and the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell, Pa. Chili Cookoff

The missions committee from Western Reserve United Methodist Church will be hosting a chili cook off that will take place on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Cost is $5 a person and includes chili, hot dogs, snacks, beverages and dessert. Pictures will be shown of past youth mission trips and there will also be a game night with board games. This event is open to the community. Second annual community Austim and Disability fair

The Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning Valley office, is seeking autism service providers to participate in its second Annual Community Autism and Disability Resource Fair on March 22 from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Service providers will have the opportunity to provide participants information about autism and disability services and their organizations in the area and NE Ohio region. Free Tax Filing Link and Assistance

The YWCA of Youngstown is offering a self-serve link to file taxes for free. Also being offered are free tax workshops and free tax filing assistance. The self-serve link is available on the YWCA website at ywca.org/youngstown. To file taxes through this link, users must have a household income under $65,000 if single and $95,000 if married. Also needed are the user’s social security number, W2’s, 1099’s, 1098’s, information about other income, deduction and credit information (such as child care expenses, tuition, bills and union dues) and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. For free tax filing assistance, walk-ins will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. March 6 and 20, and April 10 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. YWCA Dance-a-thon

The YWCA of Youngstown is seeking participants for a Dance-a-thon to take place from 4-9 p.m. on March 7 at the YWCA of Youngstown, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. Two people or more may form a team. Also needed are dance groups interested in performing. Individuals and spectators are welcome. The cost is $15 per person for team captain and members, $20 for individuals and $8 for spectators. Team captains must be age 18 or older. The event is open to those age 8 and older. Included in the event are door prizes, themed music, prizes, Dance-a-thon T-shirts, goodie bags, refreshments, a best dressed team prize and basket raffles. On Feb. 20 and 28 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, there will be twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

What is 3-D Printing? How does it work and why is this technology becoming so popular? See a demonstration of loading a 3-D print job and watch the printer in action. This event is for the whole family.

Celebrate the arts

The 14th annual Celebration of the Arts will soon begin at the Boardman library. Enjoy artwork by Boardman area students in grades 7-12. Join the library for an opening night kickoff complete with a 3-D printing demonstration and refreshments on Feb. 24. 6:30-8 p.m. Artwork will be on display from Feb. 24 until March 3.

MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2015-2016

Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2015-2016 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 22 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Wintertime tea

Enjoy some southern charm with a fundraiser for the Antonucci Horiculture library at Fellows Riverside Gardens on March 1 from 2-4 p.m. Treats, entertainment, tea and conversation will be provided. Hats are admired, but not required. Call FRG to register. The cost is $35 per person.

Botany for beginners

Have you ever been stumped by a botanical name? Are you confused by differences between xylem and phloem? Cabin fever fest

Bum off the winter blues at Cabin Fever Fest on Feb. 21 from 12-2 p.m. at the Wick Recreation Area. A chili cook-off, outdoor games, sled riding and other activities will be provided. Enter the snow sculpting competition (weather permitting) and participate in winter crafts. Sample chili and vote for your favorite for a small donation. Yoga in the gardens

Enjoy yoga that will help you keep a healthy outlook on Tuesdays and Thursdays in February from 9:30-11 a.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. Bring a mat and a small blanket. The cost is $10 per class and classes will take place at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

T’ai Chi step one in the gardens

Restorative Yoga

Begin the morning with quiet time, restoring the body and nourishing the mind with restorative yoga and journaling with Michelle O’Brien on Feb. 28 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Each class will explore a specific topic to reflect on as you allow yourself to open to the process of relaxation and mindfulness. Bring several blankets, a pillow and a notebook. Hot dog hike

Mary Smith will present a program about the National Audubon Society’s priority species and habitats on Feb. 24 from 7-8 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm. Mary previously had worked for Audubon Maryland-DC.

Heritage gardening seminar

Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Garden Seminar: Heritage Gardening for the 21st Century on Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Discover some of the successful, sustainable, and simple plants from the 18th through early 20th centuries. These tough and adaptable plants represent the foundation of our gardens today. Speakers will look at historic gardening methods that can be applied to our current gardens. Explore the rich heritage of the garden and what it means. The speakers’ books will be available for purchase at the seminar. Twice-Loved Book Sale

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host the Twice-Loved Books Sale Feb. 21 through March 1 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Peruse the tables in the Antonucci Horticulture Library for much loved books on gardening, cooking and nature. There will also be magazines for sale. Donations of related used books are appreciated at any time. All proceeds will benefit the Antonucci Horticulture Library.

Reader’s choice book club

The Boardman Library will hold a discussion on “The Good Earth,” Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Pearl S. Buck. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. A preview of April’s book, “The Glass Castle,” by Jeannette Walls will be provided on March 2 at 7:00 p.m. For adults.

Libraries are for making

Teen Tech Week is a national initiative designed to connect teens with the digital resources offered by libraries. Each day during the week of March 9-13 Boardman Library will be making something tech-related. Come every day if you want, or just stop in on the days when you can make it. TAB (Teen Advisory Board) Meeting

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting at Boardman Library. Help plan and support teen activities in the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. For teens in grades 7-12 at 6:30 p.m. March 7.

March madness: book battle

Sixteen YA books face off in head-to-head competition, but only one can win the Battle of the Books at Boardman Library. Fill out and submit your book bracket to be eligible for a random prize drawing. For teens in grades 7-12 during regular library hours in the month of March.

Sensory Story Time

The Boardman Library will offer family story time with a sensory focus for preschool and school age children.This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. We will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals on March 28 at 2:00 p.m.. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Night owl story time

Degree awarded to Drummond

Lauren Drummond from Boardman graduated from Walsh University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (Accelerated Prgm). More than 290 graduates were awarded their respective doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees during the Dec.14 Commencement Ceremony.
