As part of its latest effort to help make the community a better place through volunteer work, the Austintown Juniorettes visited the Akron Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center on Dec. 30, where they made and donated 10 comfort baskets to the Touched by Nathan Foundation.

The Touched by Nathan Foundation helps parents in the Mahoning Valley that have babies born with fragile conditions.

“It was a great opportunity to interact with my friends and help others at the same time,” said Talia Diaz, who has been a member of the Juniorettes for one year.

The Austintown Juniorettes are a group of 13 girls ages 12-18 who do volunteer work in the community. They are sponsored and mentored by the members of the Austintown Junior Women’s League. The Austintown Juniorettes began on Dec. 30, 2012.

The Austintown Juniorettes have done several other volunteer projects since the group was founded. In July 2014 they volunteered their time assisting young children with crafts at the YSU Summer Festival of Arts. In Oct. 2014 they volunteered at the Millcreek MetroParks Pumpkin Walk at Twilight at Fellows Riverside Gardens, and helped make more than 250 craft spiders with the children.

“It’s fun, and I feel good giving back to my community,” said Diaz, who said she would be interested in joining the Austintown Junior Women’s League when she gets older.
