Facing multiple charges

SHARON, PA.

A hearing is scheduled before a Mercer County magistrate next week for a Hermitage man accused of fleeing from Sharon police and backing up into one of their cruisers.

According to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV, an off-duty Sharon officer says he spotted John Jason Gruitza, 40, passed out behind the driver’s seat of a vehicle in the area of Kimberly Road and Daugherty Avenue on Thursday afternoon. Police say that when the off-duty officer identified himself, Gruitza drove away.

When a marked patrol vehicle attempted to stop Gruitza, he pulled over near Woodbine Drive and Todd Avenue in Hermitage.

As that officer got out of his vehicle, Gruitza pulled away and drove south on Todd Avenue. Gruitza then pulled into a driveway of a home in the 200 block of Todd Avenue and the patrol vehicle pulled behind his vehicle.

As the officer was leaving his vehicle, Gruitza put his vehicle in reverse striking the patrol vehicle.

Gruitza is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, fleeing or attempting to elude police, limitations on backing and public drunkenness.
