Bond set at $5M for Ohio man in slaying of elderly couple

COSHOCTON, Ohio (AP) — A man who led authorities on a nationwide manhunt after being charged in the slayings of an elderly Ohio couple is in jail on a $5 million bond.

Bond for 29-year-old Robert Clark was set during a hearing today in Coshocton, 60 miles south of Canton. Clark did not have an attorney. A prosecutor said Clark has made incriminating statements about the slayings.

Clark and 21-year-old Jeffery Stewart have been charged with one count of murder in the deaths of 88-year-old Doyle Chumney and his 79-year-old wife Lillian of Strasburg. Their remains were found in their badly burned car Jan. 22, the day after they were reported missing.

Clark and two companions were arrested in Arizona on Feb. 5 after a string of armed robberies in three states.
