The English Center, in collaboration with the Youngstown City Schools Adult Basic Literacy Education program, will offer free U.S. citizenship preparation classes. The classes will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays from March 10 through May 19 at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St. Classes will be in the ABLE Suite, Classroom B-002. The classes are designed to help potential citizens prepare for the citizenship test.

Classes will cover American history, government and a review of the naturalization application. Call the English Center at 330-743-5767 for information or to register for classes.

Canfield native chosen president of student union

Cole Hassay of Canfield, a junior political science and economics major at John Carroll University, has been selected the president of the university’s student union. He was inaugurated Jan. 15. This marks his third year on the student union. He also is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, the political honor society Pi Sigma Alpha and has volunteered on several political campaigns.

Scholarship available

The Deputy John “Sonny” Litch Memorial Scholarship is available to students of Croatian/Hungarian heritage who will be attending a Catholic high school or any university beginning in 2015. The scholarship is for $1,000.

Liberty kindergarten registration set

Liberty School District’s kindergarten registration for 2015-16 will be March 9 through March 20. Beginning next Monday, registration packets can be picked up and appointments set up at E.J. Blott Elementary School, 4115 Shady Road, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Board member to be recognized

Cheryl Basista, a member of the Weathersfield school and Trumbull Career and Technical Center boards, will be presented with the Ohio School Boards Association’s Award of Achievement on March 4.

The award is given to school board members in recognition of their commitment to training and leadership activities.
