Canfield swimmers win Akron sectional

AKRON

The Canfield High School boys swim team set three meet records in winning Saturday’s Division II sectional meet.

Connor Brady was involved in the three records. He set two of them in the 100 fly (51.04) and 100 back (52.28). His 400 relay team included Ben Brucoli, Alec Gaetano and Matthew Bogen (3:16.79).

In addition to the three sectional titles, Canfield also had these event winners: Gaetano, 200 Free (1:52.47); Kyle Anderson, 200 IM (2:01.52) and 500 Free (4:54.86); and 200 Medley Relay (Anderson, Bogen, Brady, Brucoli, 1:40.44).

Martinos shown on Discovery show

Martino Motorsports drag racers Tom Martino and Ryan Martino will be seen in tonight’s episode of Discover Channel’s “Fat N Furious: Rolling Thunder.”

The Martinos team up with Christmas Automotive for the season two debut at 10 p.m.

Cooper to speak to Curbstone

Chet Cooper, Youngstown State Faculty Athletic Adviser, will be the guest speaker today at the weekly luncheon of The Curbstone Coaches at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza.

The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

Tri-T Baseball meets Wednesday

Tri-T Baseball’s next regular-season meeting will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Poland Baseball building on Sheridan Road.

All league presidents whose teams play in Tri-T are required to be at this meeting.

Merling tied for 1st at Delta Challenge

Youngstown State women’s golfer Aislynn Merling is tied for the lead after two rounds of play at the Delta Gamma Challenge hosted by Texas State at the Landa Park Golf Course.

Merling is tied with two other golfers with the third round set for Monday.

Merling opened with an even-par 71 and was in seventh place after Sunday’s first round. Later in the day she fired a two-under score of 69 to move up the leaderboard into the top spot. Merling is tied with Lora Assad from Texas State and UALR’s Sabrina Bonanno.

Former NHL player Montador found dead

CHICAGO

Former NHL defenseman Steve Montador was remembered Sunday for being a solid teammate and for his work with the players’ union.

Montador was found unconscious in his home in Mississauga, Ontario, early Sunday morning and was later pronounced dead, according to the Peel Region Police. He was 35. No foul play was suspected.

Montador made his NHL debut in 2001 with Calgary and played for six teams in parts of 10 seasons. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native had 33 goals and 98 assists in 571 career games.

Yankees to retire Pettitte’s number

NEW YORK

A person familiar with the decision confirms the New York Yankees plan to honor Andy Pettitte this summer by retiring his No. 46 and giving the pitcher a plaque in Monument Park.

Pettitte’s son, Josh, posted the news on Twitter earlier Sunday and said Andy Pettitte day at Yankee Stadium will be Aug. 23, when New York plays the Cleveland Indians.
