Programs planned during lent at area churches


This is a listing of programs and activities being offered during Lent.

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Drive, Boardman: The midweek Lenten series, “Restored in Christ,” will be at noon and 6:30 p.m. with soup suppers at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25, March 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., Boardman: Lenten series will focus on the book, “The Last Week,” by scholars Marcus Borg and John Crossan. Sessions will be 9 a.m. Sundays in the library, 10 a.m. Wednesdays in the library and 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the parlor, Feb. 22-April 1.

Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., Canfield: Lenten breakfasts are planned from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, starting Ash Wednesday and continuing through April 1. Breakfasts are free; free-will offerings will be accepted.

First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown: Lenten Bible study is scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. Mondays, March 2, 9, 16, 22 and 30, in the parlor led by Pastor Carolyn Griffeth. Call the church office at 330-744-4307 to order a book.

First Presbyterian Church, 3654 Main St., Mineral Ridge: Lenten programs on Wednesdays include meal at 6 p.m. and worship and communion at 7 p.m. March 18 with Jed and Jenny Koball, mission co-workers in Peru, speaking. A free-will offering will be received.

Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman: Lenten midweek services will be at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Ash Wednesday program will be “The Pharisee and the Tax Collector” and Feb. 25, “The Sower and the Seed.”

Grace Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown: Lenten potluck suppers and services on Symbols of the Cross on Wednesdays, Feb. 25, March 4, 11, 18 and 25. Supper will be at 5:30 p.m. with informal worship at 6:30.

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield: “Making Sense of the Cross” Bible study is planned at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 24-March 31. Holden evening prayer service will follow at 7:45 p.m.

Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive, Youngstown: Lenten services will be conducted at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Martin Luther church women will provide a light lunch of soup, bread and dessert after the 12:30 p.m. service. A free-will offering will be taken. The soup menu will be: Ash Wednesday, pasta fagiole; Feb. 25, beef vegetable; March 4, wedding; March 11, ham and bean; March 18, chicken noodle; and March 25, stuffed pepper. Take-out is available for $6 a quart.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2985 Center Road, Poland: During Lent, a soup supper and worship will be Wednesdays, starting Feb. 25. Supper will be from 6 to 6:40 p.m. and Holden Evening Prayer at 7 p.m.

St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman: A Lenten Bible study will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting next week through March 26, in the St. Luke Room led by pastoral associates, Dean Mike Kocjancic and Diana Hancharenko. Participants should bring their Bibles; other materials will be provided. Registration is suggested but not required; call the parish office at 330-758-2325.

St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown: Evening prayer and lecture series are planned at 7 p.m. Mondays. Topics and presenters will be March 2, Eucharistic ministers by Deacon Mike Koczancic; March 9, ushers and musicians, Pat Campbell; March 16, readers by Deacon Bob Friedman; and March 23, altar servers by Pat Campbell. A communal penance service will be at 6 p.m. March 30.

St. James Episcopal Church, Glenwood Ave., Boardman: Building on a Lenten tradition of reflection and study, there will be two different programs. At 10 a.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 25-April 1, in the chapel, there will be morning prayer followed by a look ahead to to Sunday readings. At 6 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 26-March 26, there will be a light soup and bread meal then discussion on the book, “Speaking Christian” by Marcus Borg. Compline will be at 7:30 p.m.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown: Prayer Writing Workshop, A Lenten Discipline, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 21 with the Rev. Rosalind Hughes, who graduated from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, and Bexley Hall Episcopal Seminary in Columbus, and was ordained a deacon in June 2011, and a priest in January 2012. Lenten Wednesday Evenings will begin with supper at 5:30 p.m. and discussion at 6 on “The Way of Benedict” with sessions planned Feb. 25 on stability, March 4 on change, March 11 on material things and March 18 on authority with compline will be at 7. Lenten Quiet Morning will be from 9 a.m. to noon March 7 on “Mindfulness in our Daily Lives.” Lent Adult Forum will be at 9:15 a.m. Sundays, Feb. 22-April 12, in the parlor. The classes will focus on the Revised Common Lectionary readings from the Old Testament, Epistles, and Gospels. The study book is “The Lord Is Our Salvation.” David Hill will lead the study. St. Edward Church, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown: During Lent, the parish will continue its tradition with Mass at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, followed by a simple supper at 6 and speaker at 6:45. The theme is “Embracing God’s Mercy and Compassion.” Programs planned are: Feb. 24, the Rev. Michael Balash of the Office of Worship in the Diocese of Youngstown on “Experiencing the Mercy of God: Overview of the Sacrament of Reconciliation;” March 3, the Rev. Joseph Jablonski, “Healing Life’s Journey;” March 10, David Schmidt of Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Lifein the diocese, “Receiving Forgiveness: Roots of Forgiveness Starts in the Family;” March 17, Sister Lu Haidnick, pastoral associate of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Aurora Ohio, “Deciding To Forgive: Scripture and Forgiveness;” March 24, Sister Rose Ann Krantz, pastoral associate at St. Edward Parish, “Sharing Forgiveness: Principles of Forgiveness:” and March 31, Monsignor Robert Siffrin and visiting priests, communal celebration of reconciliation.

St. Paul the Apostle Church, 10143 Main St., New Middletown: The Lenten mission, “Building Your Faith on a Firm Foundation,” will be presented by Richard Lane at 1 p.m. March 22, after the 9 a.m. Masses and at 6:45 p.m. March 23 and 24 and after 9 a.m. Mass March 25. Lane will “preach, teach and share the word of God in the truest spirit of ecumenism.” He has been featured on Catholic Answers Live, Relevant Radio and EWTN-”Journey Home.” The free sessions are for families, youth and adults of all faiths. Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 618 Ohio Ave., McDonald: The host church and St. Rose Parish in Girard are sponsoring Lent Evenings of Reflection from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 22-24. The Rev. James Walker will present, “The Church to Heal and Be Healed: Reflections on the Gospel of Mark, The Task of Building and Rebuilding the Church.” Father Walker serves as pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Warren. His reflections focus on renewal of the mission of the Church to proclaim the Kingdom of God in challenging times. “Jesus Heals from Within” will be Feb. 22, “ Jesus Saves Us as the Messiah We Struggle to Accept” on Feb. 23 and “ Jesus Renews His Church with an Authority Like No Other” on Feb. 24. All are welcome. A free-will offering will be accepted. Refreshments will follow in the church hall.

Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman: A Lenten movie series, “The Chronicles of Narnia,” The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” will be offered at 6 p.m. Sundays and 1 p.m. Wednesdays. The series will be led by Susan Sheridan, a church member for more than 22 years and an elder. Sunday sessions will be Feb. 22, March 1, 8, 15 and 22 and Wednesdays, Feb. 25, March 4, 11, 18 and 25. A discussion in the parlor will precede the viewing in the theater near the youth room.

Zion Lutheran Church, 10857 Main St., New Middletown: Combined Lenten services will follow the theme of “Tree of Life in Lent” with the schedule, Feb. 25 at Zion, March 4 at Old Springfield, March 11 at Petersburg Presbyterian, March 18 at St. John Lutheran and March 25 at Zion.
