POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent police activity in Girard, Hubbard and Liberty:

GIRARD

Feb. 8

Attempted breaking and entering: Someone tried to pry open and did extensive damage to a garage door in the 200 block of Forsythe Avenue.

Theft: A West Wilson Avenue woman reported a $25 metal coal shovel had been removed from her front porch.

Menacing: An East Second Street woman told officers a man who has been stalking her also deliberately drove past her residence, causing the accuser to fear for her safety. A charge was pending against the man.

Trespassing: Police reported seeing a suspicious person at night at Classic Auto Care Inc., 940 N. State St., before charging Mladen Stojanovich of Ninth Street, Niles, with criminal trespassing. The 42-year-old Stojanovich admitted he had been rummaging through a trash bin in search of items, a report said.

Feb. 9

Harassment: An Ohio Avenue man said a woman made such a call to him.

Feb. 10

Burglary: To a residence in the 100 block of West Wilson Avenue via unknown means. Stolen were a snow shovel and a broom.

Recovered property: A driver’s license, a debit card, a grocery-store card and various pieces of paperwork were found in a front yard in the 1600 block of North State Street.

Identity fraud: A Shawnee Drive woman told authorities she received correspondence from the Ohio Department of Taxation claiming her income-tax form was being processed for a possible refund, even though she had not yet filed a return, which led the woman to believe someone had used her personal information fraudulently.

Drugs: A traffic stop on East Liberty Street led to a felony drug-possession charge against 25-year-old Stephen Doran of East Main Street, Girard. A small bag of suspected heroin was in the car, a report showed.

Feb. 11

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into Mashburn Tree Services, 1115 S. State St., and stole a $40,000 wood chipper and a $2,000 piece of hydraulic equipment.

Arrest: Robin L. Betts, Sr., 30, of Campbell, was charged with violating a protection order after an East Second Street woman told police Betts was pounding on her door and in violation of her order against him.

Domestic violence: Two Girard girls, 13 and 15, were charged with the crime after their mother alleged the teens had threatened to harm her during an argument. The older girl also threatened her mother in officers’ presence, they said.

HUBBARD

Feb. 5

Arrest: Campbell police handed 41-year-old Jason E. Heard, no address listed, to Hubbard authorities. He was wanted on a warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Trespassing: A woman said her former husband entered her Oakdale Avenue home without permission, though no charges had been filed at the time of the report.

Theft: A woman reported a cellphone, $20 and her driver’s license missing from her purse after shopping at a North Main Street store.

Feb. 6

Harassment: A School Street woman said a Leavittsburg woman created Facebook accounts without the accuser’s permission and sent unwanted, derogatory text messages to her.

Feb. 7

Arrest: Weathersfield Township police relinquished custody of Nicole L. Pietrangeli, 44, who listed addresses on Youngstown-Hubbard Road in Hubbard and Whitman Avenue in Youngstown. She was accused of failing to appear in court on a theft charge.

Recovered property: A bank card was found protruding from an automated-teller machine at a local credit union.

Feb. 8

Possible assault: A Drummond Avenue woman told police she believed her daughter’s boyfriend had beaten up the daughter and abused another family member.

Feb. 9

Domestic violence: A Hubbard boy, 17, was charged after police were dispatched to his residence and alleged having seen the teen kicking and punching his stepmother during an argument.

Feb. 10

Arrest: Poland Village police apprehended and turned over to Hubbard authorities 25-year-old Esteban E. Diaz of Hamilton Street, Youngstown, who was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Feb. 11

Menacing: An official with Hubbard Middle School, 250 Hall Ave., reported being made aware of a note a student had allegedly written containing unflattering comments and a threat against a teacher. The student was released to the custody of a parent.

LIBERTY

Feb. 5

Theft/criminal damaging: Someone gained access to the roof of a structure in the 3000 block of Belmont Avenue, damaged three heating and air-conditioning units and removed the coils from them. Damage was estimated at $9,000.

Feb. 6

Arrest: Youngstown police in the 2700 block of Belmont Avenue handed 71-year-old James L. Hopson to township authorities. Hopson, of Catalina Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a probation-violation charge.

Theft: A Colonial Drive man reported a cellphone stolen.

Theft: A Northview Drive man alleged his girlfriend stole his wallet.

Feb. 7

Arrest: A traffic stop on state Route 304 resulted in the arrest of 29-year-old Anthony M. Palestro of Redwood Drive, Hubbard, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired. Palestro’s blood-alcohol count was 0.108, a report stated.

Drugs/weapon: A traffic stop near Colonial Drive resulted in felony charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of crack cocaine and drugs against 25-year-old Keylynn L. Taylor of Colonial, Youngstown. Taylor had a stolen loaded .40-caliber handgun and no concealed-carry permit, as well as a large amount of suspected crack cocaine and a bag containing two pills, a report showed.

Weapon: Officers responded to a possible theft at Walmart, 200 Goldie Road, where they charged 34-year-old Paul M. Milliman with one misdemeanor count of carrying concealed weapons after saying Milliman, of Washington Avenue, Girard, had two small knives and a set of brass knuckles.

Theft: A man stole an undetermined quantity of merchandise from a Speedway gas station, 4210 Belmont Ave.

Theft: A Unionville, Tenn., woman who owns a residence in the 100 block of Laurel Drive told police she suspected two former tenants had stolen a small refrigerator, a washing machine, a kitchen table and other property as they were being evicted.

Arrest: Boardman authorities handed Damond L. Brown of Millcreek Boulevard, Boardman, to township police. Brown, 21, was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant.

Feb. 8

Dog bite: A Beverly Hills Drive couple reported having suffered dog bites. The woman had an injury to her left arm.

Feb. 9

Arrest: James Gurney, 52, was taken into custody in the 3900 block of Belmont Avenue. Gurney, of West Chalmers Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a charge of failing to appear in court.

Identity fraud: A Tanglewood Drive woman discovered a $254 unauthorized charge to her debit card that apparently originated from the Youngstown Water Department.

Feb. 10

Arrest: Officers at the Mahoning County jail picked up 46-year-old Stephen Slade of Scioto Street, Youngstown. Slade was wanted on a charge of failing to appear in court.

Feb. 12

Breaking and entering: Police followed suspicious footprints in the snow near Liberty High School, 1 Leopard Way, before charging a 15-year-old Youngstown boy with breaking and entering, criminal trespassing and criminal damaging. A search revealed that someone had removed a vent and entered a concession stand, a report showed.
