As it has done monthly for more than two years, Poland library hosted a Lego my Library event on Jan. 20, in which children in grades kindergarten through six could come and build whatever they wanted out of Legos.

“We started it because we were looking for something that appealed to school-age kids,” Poland library youth librarian Annette Ahrens said. “We have a lot of programs for preschool, toddler, babies, for teens. We didn’t have a lot that was really interesting for school-age kids.”

The event attracted seven children, who dove right in in building whatever they wanted.

“We always know that younger kids come in, so we have the Duplos (the larger Legos), so if younger siblings want to come with their older big brothers and sisters they have something they can play with too,” Ahrens said.

Ahrens said the one-hour event has helped the children with skills they will need in school.

“Legos are building and we’re also tying in with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) that’s so important in kids’ education,” she said. “We’re just kind of using it as a way to get those kids in the library.”

Ahrens said the Poland library displays the finished projects on a bookshelf in the children’s section until the following month’s event.

Ahrens said there have been some very creative things that the children have made.

“We’ve had a lot of houses,” she said. “I’ve seen kids build a lot of cars. I saw a kid do a helicopter; it was very cool.”
