The Austintown library hosted its monthly Lego my Library event on Jan. 7, allowing children to construct projects out of Legos.

The one-hour event has been done at the library for approximately one year.

“Legos are really popular and Lego books get checked out a lot,” Austintown library librarian Kathe Orr said of why the program was started. “We have a lot of paperbacks on Legos, a lot of hard backs. We just thought this would give kids that didn’t have a whole bunch at home that they could come and play with. A lot of libraries do this. It’s a nice way for kids to get to play with them and take out some books they like.”

The library used to display the children’s finished projects, but has since stopped due to the large amount of children who come to the library for after-school events. Now pictures are taken of the projects and displayed in the library until the following month’s event.

The children are allowed to come and make any kind of project they want out of the Legos, of which the library has thousands in several tubs.

Orr said the attendance of the program fluctuates by the month.

“Some weeks we get a lot and some weeks not so much,” she said. “A lot of them come with their friends.”

Orr said any children who come to the event can have fun playing with the Legos as well as make new friends.

“It’s always good to come to the library,” she said. “It gives them a chance to check out some books on the topic if they’re interested and maybe get some new ideas. Plus they make friends. It’s a really nice way for them to make friends.”
