AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Board of Education voted unanimously to start the 2015-16 school year Aug. 24.

The memorandum of understanding with the teachers’ union, which has language in its contract about start dates, was worked on by union and school officials, said Vincent Colaluca, superintendent.

Teachers will report on Aug. 21 with students starting the following Monday.

“We want to try to get in as many academic days before testing as we can,” said Colaluca. “There’s not a whole lot of reasons to be in school in June anymore ... [We] front-load the days as much as possible.”

He also said that Austintown schools began Aug. 25 for this school year.

“I think we’re just trying to get in front of our students for instruction time,” said Kathy Mock, board president.
