Five charged from drug arrests at Kirwan Homes

Staff report

CAMPBELL

Two separate incidents that happened the same day at an apartment at the Kirwan Homes on Monroe Street led police to detain nine adults and a juvenile on a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking and carrying concealed weapons.

Ultimately, five were charged.

“This was a good win for the city of Campbell,” said police Chief Drew Rauzan. “Anytime you take weapons and narcotics off the streets, it is a win for all of us.”

According to the report, the first incident happened about 10:40 a.m. Tuesday when Rakeem Gray, 24, got into an argument with two men inside the Gray’s apartment. Police said the men attempted to rob him, but Gray was able to force them out.

One of the men began firing shots into the apartment. The report states officers observed several bullet holes in the window, walls, and some appliances.

Also at the apartment was Jennette Shipton, 40, of Campbell, and her 16-year-old daughter, who were both asleep at the time.

Later in the afternoon, the home manager from the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority requested a Campbell police officer to escort her to the apartment to assess the damage.

The chief responded. Gray answered the door, and allowed the two to enter. Rauzan smelled a strong odor of burnt and fresh marijuana and also observed numerous people inside. There was also a suspected marijuana cigarette on the kitchen table and several small plastic bags scattered on the floor.

The chief requested other officers to assist to conduct further investigations.

All people at the apartment were interviewed alone and searched for weapons. Demetrius Dawson, 27, of Campbell was hiding in Gray’s bedroom. Police said they found him with suspected marijuana. He is charged with possession of drugs and was released on a $325 cash bond. Police also found two small plastic bags containing suspected marijuana in a dresser drawer near where Dawson was arrested.

Police arrested Stacey Gray, 23, of Campbell for an active warrant from the city.

The report states police found a digital scale and suspected marijuana in Rakeem Gray’s bedroom. Police also found a pellet gun and a loaded handgun in the kitchen area.

Police said they believe the handgun belonged to Bernard Hasley Jr., 25, of Youngstown, who had hidden the gun before officers came into the apartment, according to the report. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, and held without bond in Campbell City Jail.

Shipton is charged with child endangerment. She was taken to the Mahoning County jail on an active warrant in Boardman and later released.

Rakeem Gray is charged with drug trafficking and is in jail without bond. Stacey Gray was released on a summons for his warrant.

All five will appear in court Friday.
