Man arrested on probation violation

YOUNGSTOWN

A man on probation for a vehicular-homicide charge was arrested Monday on the North Side for a probation violation in the case.

Michael Koval, 34, of Youngstown, was taken into custody at Elm Street and West Dennick Avenue.

Reports said Koval was driving a car that was pulled over by police about 3:25 p.m. for not having a front license plate. Court records show Koval was charged in September 2013 with a Sept. 1, 2012, crash at Mahoning and Hogue avenues in which his father, 59-year-old Michael Koval, was killed.

The younger Koval pleaded no contest to a first misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter March 4, 2014, and he was fined and placed on probation.

Court records show a probation-violation hearing was scheduled for December, but records do not list what the violation was.

When Koval did not show up, a warrant was issued for his arrest, records show.

Reports of the accident said Koval was driving east on Mahoning Avenue when the car he was driving went off the road and struck a utility pole.
