Youngstown State women’s soccer head coach Will Lemke announced Maria Vitello (Long Beach, Calif.) has signed a national letter of intent to join the Penguins program for the 2015 season.

Vitello is the eighth recruit to sign with the Penguins. The forward/midfielder was a two-year letterwinner at Lakewood High School and recorded 30 career assists in just two seasons.

She was named team MVP as a sophomore and had four goals and 17 assists in her last season.

Connor named USHL forward of the week

YOUNGSTOWN

The United States Hockey League announced that forward Kyle Connor has been named CCM Forward of the Week for the second time this season.

Connor scored four goals and an assist, along with a plus-four on-ice rating in three games over the weekend, helping the Phantoms go 3-0 and earn six points.

The University of Michigan commit netted the game-winner on Friday, the game-tying goal on a penalty shot midway through the third period on Saturday and capped off the weekend with a pair of goals and an assist in a win on Sunday — his fourth two-goal game, and 11th multi-point effort of the season.

Mettille part of OAC track and field honors

Mount Union’s Tyler Mettille (Canfield High) and Andrew Milhoan swept the Ohio Athletic Conference men’s track and field athlete of the week honors.

Mettille won OAC track athlete of the week by posting a time of 22.19 in the 200 meters which won the event and is the second-ranked time in the nation so far this season.

The senior was also part of a 4x400 relay team with senior Chase Swisher, junior Tyler Sparks and freshman Tyler Neff that posted the third best time in nation and won the event at 3:19.72. Mettille, Swisher and Sparks were part of the 4x400 relay team a year ago that swept national titles at both NCAA indoor and outdoor championship meets.

Amputee wrestler to speak at PSU Beaver

MONACA, PA

Bilateral amputee wrestler Rohan Murphy will offer his inspirational story during a speaking event at Penn State Beaver.

Murphy was born with a rare deformity, which required amputation of his legs at the age of four. Despite his physical challenge, he became an accomplished wrestler and powerlifter at Penn State, competing in international competitions around the world.

The public is invited to attend the free presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Penn State Beaver gymnasium.

Leetonia hires Hadi for football

Leetonia High School has hired Liberty wrestling coach Hadi A. Hadi to replace eight-year varsity head football coach Matt Altomare.

Altomare guided the Bears to a 32-40 mark since 2007.

Mandatory meeting for Columbiana track team

Parents of Columbiana Middle School and High School athletes that are participating in the 2015 track season need to attend a parent meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Commons.
