William C. Shivers is happy to be back home.
In November 2014, the Salem-native took on the chief position for Huntington Bank’s Mahoning Valley region.
“It is coming home for me, having lived in this market my entire life,” Shivers said.
Shivers, a 26-year-veteran of the industry, also is the president of the bank’s Greater Akron/Canton region.
The banker was always intrigued by the industry, but after working for the state auditors’ office as a state examiner his intrigue became more of a reality.
Before his career with Huntington, Shivers worked in commercial banking for KeyBank. When he moved on to Huntington, he took on more leadership positions including team leader for commercial banking and vice president for commercial banking.
To him, people have to be sold. They want to work with someone who has energy, works with them and creates an opportunity.
“You have to work hard and be persistent,” he said.
Shivers’ background extends outside of banking. He worked at Quaker Manufacturing Corp. as a director of sales and marketing and also as vice president of operations.
He received his undergraduate degree from Hiram College and a master’s degree in business administration from Franciscan University.
He believes in the opportunities he has been given and has a goal here in the Valley to continue what the bank has already done in working with customers.
“We love this market,” Shivers said. “It is very important to the overall organization.”
It is also important for the bank to be seen as a community supporter.
The Columbus-based bank partners with the local chambers of commerce, nonprofits and others to play its part.
For example, every year the bank donates thousands of bookbags stuffed with school supplies to children in the areas it serves.
Huntington’s six-state retail banking franchise extends through Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky.
In addition to his title with Huntington, Shivers serves on many boards including: the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce; board member for the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce; 2015 campaign chairman, member of the board of directors and executive committee member of the United Way of Greater Stark County; leadership advisory council for Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio; and others.
