TMH group gives grant to KSU at Trumbull

WARREN

The Women’s Auxiliary at Trumbull Memorial Hospital presented Kent State University at Trumbull’s nursing program with a grant of more than $20,000, which will be used for the purchase of a virtual intravenous simulator.

The simulator is a piece of training equipment that provides a hands-on learning experience for students in the insertion of patient IVs, for which students need to earn certification to complete their coursework.

Trumbull campus students must travel to the Kent campus to earn this certification. By having the equipment onsite at Kent State at Trumbull, the certification process can be tied into the basic curriculum and handled locally. Additionally, the equipment can be used to train other health care professionals in the community.

The Women’s Auxiliary at Trumbull Memorial Hospital is comprised of community-minded women who provide local grants each year to support health care related initiatives.

As part of its nursing program, Kent State at Trumbull offers a bachelor of science of nursing degree, which can be completed at the Trumbull Campus, with students fulfilling their clinical requirements at local health care facilities.

Youngstown PFLAG sponsors essay contest

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown PFLAG, a nonprofit group for parents and friends of lesbians and gays, has organized an essay contest for high-school students in 10th through 12th grades. It is open for submissions.

Youngstown PFLAG offers support, education and advocacy on behalf of LGBT people and their families. With the essay award contest, the 25-year-old chapter plans to recognize a youth who has made a conscious effort in the community to work toward organization goals.

Youngstown PFLAG will award a $500 prize to one youth. In March 2014, the chapter collaborated with Help Hotline and the Buckeye Regional Anti-Violence Organization for a conference on LGBT violence. A portion of the funds from the conference helped support the $500 contest.

Youngstown PFLAG is accepting contest applications and submissions. Parental consent and a letter of reference are required. The contest is open until March 15, and the winner will be announced April 15 with the award conferred in June.

This is the first contest for Youngstown PFLAG. The group hopes the contest will help promote LGBT awareness and action in the Valley. Members also hope the contest will become a regular event.
