JFK hurdler Zallow posts nation’s top time

Warren JFK senior Chad Zallow reclaimed the No. 1 time in the nation in the 60-meter hurdles, running a 7.71 at the Ohio State University Buckeye High School qualifier No. 3 on Saturday.

Zallow, a YSU recruit, has won three state outdoor titles in the hurdles.

Haslett, Mikovich lift YSU softball to victory

Senior Kayla Haslett pitched a complete game and freshman Cali Mikovich hit a home run to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 5-1 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday morning.

Sophomore Sarah Dowd and freshman Kelly Thompson-Cappadocio each had two hits and Thompson-Cappadocio also drove in a run. Haslett struck out two to pick up her first win of the season.

The Penguins (2-2) also dropped a 9-2 decision to Towson later in the day. YSU is back in action Feb. 20-21, when they play four games at the Elon Tournament in Elon, N.C.

Three Penguins win to conclude invitational

Nina Grambling won two sprinting events, Caleb Lloyd finished first in the 60m hurdles and Arnaldo Morales placed first in the high jump to pace the YSU men’s track and field team at the YSU National Invitational at the WATTS on Saturday.

Grambling won the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash in strong fashion. Grambling, who set the school record in the 60 last week, clocked in at 7.58 seconds on Saturday to win the event by .19 seconds. In the 200m, she took first with a time of 24.57 seconds.

Lloyd was strong in the 60m hurdles winning the event by .17 seconds in front of VMI’s Davon Guerrier. Morales had another victory in the high jump clearing a height of 2.00 meters on his first attempts.

The Penguins posted a time of 3:56.46 with less than two seconds separating the top three schools. They are back in action next Friday and Saturday at the SPIRE Division I Invitational in Geneva.

Underwood to speak at Hubbard fundraiser

Cleveland Indians television play-by-play announcer Matt Underwood will speak at the inaugural Hubbard High School baseball booster club’s spring training dinner at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 at the high school cafeteria. The event will raise funds for the high school’s new baseball complex.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are limited to the first 200 fans. Tickets are available for sale at Eagle Wear or Devine’s Shop-N-Save on Main Street in Hubbard.

YSU’S Brown to speak at Curbstone luncheon

John Brown, Youngstown State University assistant director of sales and events, will be the guest speaker on Monday at the weekly luncheon of The Curbstone Coaches at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza.

The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

Brookfield to honor top girls scorer Bonekovic

Brookfield High School will honor Morgan Bonekovic during halftime of the boys’ basketball game vs. Conneaut on Friday, Feb. 13. Bonekovic graduated in 2008 and is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,636 points.

Umpire association to meet today

The Youngstown Metro Umpire Association will hold a OHSAA baseball/softball meeting at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Lucianno’s Banquet Center. Umpires are reminded that they must attend four meetings to meet state requirements.
