The Poland library began a new story time program Jan. 22 for children ages 4-7 called Listen and Lego! In which they listened to a story and then built a project out of Legos that related to the story.

“We’re going to be doing it once every month,” Poland library librarian Alex Lynch said. “It’s going to replace one of the preschool story times.”

Lynch began the hour-long program by reading the book “The Tree House that Jack Built,” after which she set the children loose on the Legos, which were spread out over two tables. The children’s task was to listen to the story and then build their own tree house.

The event had 15 children and 11 adults attend.

The program differed from the normal Legos events as the children were tasked with using their imaginations to build a specific project as opposed to building whatever they wanted.

“In the normal one they just build whatever they want,” Lynch said. “This one’s going to be fun, too, but they’ll be building something pertaining to the story.”

The Legos were donated to the Poland library through a grant by the Association of Library Service to Children and the Junior Makers program. The idea is to help children learn skills pertaining to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), which will be important as they get older in school.

“I hope by listening to the story and then building something pertaining to the story, it helps build their imagination; use their imagination to build their own types of things and work together with a group of people,” Lynch said.
