A $150,000 grant from the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation will enable the Warren YWCA to convert the unused Edwards swimming pool into office space.
The pool at 375 N. Park Ave. has not been used since 2006. The grant is the largest among $196,000 awarded in the foundation’s most recent round of grants.
“This renovation will improve a landmark downtown Warren building and support the YWCA’s great work on behalf of area women,” said attorney Patrick W. Wilson, chairman of the health foundation.
The YWCA, which closed in 2005 and reopened after a yearlong fundraising campaign, has shifted its focus in recent years from women’s fitness programs to those that help disadvantaged women.
In addition to operating 12 apartments in an area that once housed a swimming pool, the YWCA works with specialists to provide mental health care, drug and alcohol treatment, life skills, job readiness, tutoring, day care and other services for women.
The foundation also announced three other grants:
$20,000 for Access Health Mahoning Valley, which arranges care for those without health insurance. The grant will help Access hire a case manager to assist uninsured adults in Trumbull County.
$20,000 for SCOPE (Senior Citizens Opportunity for Personal Endeavor) to buy a vehicle for home food deliveries.
$6,500 for the Trumbull County Health Department’s Project Dawn, which provides overdose-prevention education and take-home overdose kits.
