Man dies in I-680 crash

A Campbell man died when the semi tractor-trailer he was driving left the road on Interstate 80 East near the Interstate 680 split, hit a road sign and guardrail, then overturned.

The victim was Charles R. Baird Jr., 43. The accident happened at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Baird was driving an International straight truck. The truck was on its side, and the township fire department helped to get the vehicle upright, an OSHP dispatcher said.

The westbound lane of I-80 near the I-680 split was closed for several hours.

Interstate 80 closed Wednesday night from the Ohio state line to Interstate 376 in West Middlesex because of a multivehicle accident, the Mercer County dispatch center and Pennsylvania State Police said. A tractor-trailer jackknifed around 10:30 p.m., which caused other trucks to lose control. There were no injuries, police said. The road was to reopen by 12:30 a.m., police said.

Boil-water advisory

Due to two main-line water breaks, all Trumbull County water customers who live west of Henn Hyde and north of Carriage Hill in the northern part of Howland Township are advised to boil their water until further notice, according to a news release from the county’s Sanitary Engineer’s Office.

Township trustees moved forward Wednesday on two projects, one to install new signs and another to install a sidewalk.

The board voted to authorize an application for a Safe Routes to School grant, which is a program that helps communities increase foot traffic to schools.

The grant, which is administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation, would cover the entire cost, up to $400,000, of installing a new sidewalk.

The township will submit a proposal for a sidewalk on Dobbins Road from the elementary school to the Tuscany development. Village officials plan to participate in the application, with a proposal for a sidewalk on Sheridan Road between Island Drive and Johnston Place.

Board denies parole

The Ohio Parole Board has continued the prison sentence of Paul W. Smith, 48, for another five years. He will be eligible for parole again in March 2020. Smith killed his pregnant wife, Gina, on July 29, 1987, in the McDonald’s Restaurant in McKinley Heights. Smith, a Newton Falls High School graduate, has served 27 years of a 15-years-to-life sentence. He was 21 years old at the time of the killing.

The next meeting of the youth council of the Youngstown chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is set for 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Newport Branch library’s large meeting room, 3730 Market St.

Lecture on heart failure

Alliance Community Hospital, 200 E. State St., is offering a free community lecture luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Friday in Conference Room 1A in the hospital cafeteria. The topic is “What is Heart Failure” presented by Stephanie Boyd, registered nurse, director of the Aultman Heart Center at the hospital.

Boyd will discuss the causes heart failure, symptoms of the disease and treatment options; and lifestyle changes needed for patients with heart failure, including activity, diet and medications.

The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Registration is not required.
