Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor supports proposal to end income taxes for small biz
YOUNGSTOWN — Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor touted Gov. John Kasich’s budget proposal today that includes the elimination of income taxes for small businesses with gross receipts of up to $2 million.
Among the companies that would be impacted if the state Legislature approves the proposal is J.L. Treharn & Co. Inc., which makes antique furniture reproductions at the Ward Bakery building, 1024 Mahoning Ave. The company owns the building, and has been there for 29 years.
Kasich’s proposal includes a 23 percent income-tax reduction for all taxpayers.
It also calls for an increase in the state sales tax from 5.75 percent to 6.25 percent.
“All taxes are bad,” said Taylor, a Republican, after touring Treharn. “If you believe all taxes are bad, there are some that are worse than others." The income tax "has more of a detrimental impact on economic activity and economic development” than sales tax.
