GM bonuses could pump millions in local economy — what will they buy?
LORDSTOWN
General Motors’ profit-sharing payments and performance bonuses to local employees will do more than just benefit the workers and their families.
The $9,000 payment the majority of Lords-town workers will receive will benefit the local economy, analysts and local businesses say.
Nearly every conceivable business could reap the benefits of about 4,100 workers’ receiving $9,000.
Locally, the total potential payout for eligible workers of $37 million will go into their pockets and probably find its way into the local economy.
“It is a win-win for everyone,” said Robert Morales, president of United Auto Workers Local 1714.
George Beshara, owner of The Gold Exchange on Market Street, has some GM workers as customers.
“If they have anything left over, I will see them,” he said.
