BREAKING NEWS | West Side man indicted for city's first homicide this year
YOUNGSTOWN — A 44-year-old West Side man in the Mahoning County jail for driving the car of an elderly homicide victim was indicted for the man’s death today by a county grand jury.
The grand jury indicted Joseph Faunda, of North Maryland Avenue, on one count of aggravated murder, and one count of murder, aggravated robbery and receiving stolen property for the death of 84-year-old Mykola Iwaniuk, who was found about 5:30 a.m. Jan. 21 inside his home in the 1700 block of Oakwood Avenue on the West Side.
Faunda was taken into custody Jan. 26 after police were tipped that he was driving Iwaniuk’s car, which neighbors said they had seen leave his home late Jan. 19. The car was found a couple of hours after Iwaniuk’s body was found at Calvary Cemetery.
Faunda has been in jail on a $100,000 bond on a receiving stolen property charge since he was questioned by detectives. Reports said he told detectives he found the car running on Evanston Avenue and it had a television set inside it.
