Two people police say were making methamphetamine in a hotel room had their cases bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury.

Mike McBride, a county assistant prosecutor, said the cases of Nathan Steer, 28, and Fallon Barnett, 31, both of Damascus, were bound over during their preliminary hearings in Mahoning County Area Court here.

They are charged with illegal assembly of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs, and Barnett also is charged with obstruction of justice. County deputies went to a hotel on West Akron-Canfield Road to arrest Steer on a warrant for a felony drug charge. That’s when deputies discovered materials to make meth.

Amato appointed by Gov. Kasich

COLUMBUS

Gov. John Kasich appointed C. Christopher Amato, a Wellsville attorney, to replace Carol Ann Robb as a Columbiana County Municipal Court judge.

Amato’s term starts Monday, and he’ll have to run in the November general election to retain the seat for the remainder of the term that expires Jan. 1, 2020.

Kasich, a Republican, selected Amato from three candidates given to him by the Columbiana County Republican Party.

The other two candidates were Megan Forsythe of Hanover Township, an assistant county prosecutor, and J. Bradley Allison of East Palestine, a county common pleas court domestic relations magistrate.

Next Thursday is the deadline for those wanting to run for this judicial post in the November general election to turn in nominating petitions. Judge Robb vacated the seat Sunday and started as a 7th District Court of Appeals judge Monday.

Bank robber sought

Police are searching for whoever robbed a PNC Bank here Wednesday afternoon.

The robbery took place around 3 p.m. when the suspect, described as a male wearing a black fedora and leather jacket, stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank.

He fled on foot heading south before getting into a silver Cadillac.

Theft, drug charges

BOARDMAN

A township man facing theft and drug charges has pleaded not guilty in Mahoning County Area Court here.

Harry Carcase, 22, of Glenridge Road, was arrested Friday at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 550 Boardman-Poland Road, after a store employee reported to police that Carcase took more than $300 worth of merchandise from the store.

Police then found marijuana and drug paraphernalia with Carcase. He is charged with misdemeanor counts of theft, possession of drugs and two drug- paraphernalia charges. His next court appearance is March 17.

MCCTC open house

CANFIELD

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 North Palmyra Road, will host an open house from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Parents of students and students interested in attending MCCTC are invited to visit and learn more about the career center’s 23 programs, tour the career center and meet with instructors.
