Hunt extends outside Ohio for man sought in couple’s slaying
NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a man wanted on a murder charge in the slaying of an elderly couple in northeast Ohio is believed to be involved in armed robberies over the weekend in three states.
Twenty-nine-year-old Robert Clark is suspected of committing two robberies in West Virginia on Saturday, one in South Carolina on Sunday afternoon and one in Georgia on Sunday night.
Tuscarawas County Chief Deputy Orvis Campbell says two Ohio men are with Clark but weren’t involved in the slayings of Doyle and Lillian Chumney last month. The couple’s remains were found in a badly burned car on a country road in Coshocton County on Jan. 22.
Twenty-one-year-old Jeffery Stewart was arrested Saturday and is charged with murder. Campbell says Stewart has implicated Clark in the slayings.
