Hamilton wants tougher competition
JEREZ, Spain
Lewis Hamilton hopes to have several challengers, rather than just his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, when he defends his Formula One title this season.
Last year’s battle was intense, with Hamilton and Rosberg feuding as their title scrap went down to the final race in Abu Dhabi.
But everyone else was lagging way behind and Mercedes was mostly unchallenged, winning 16 out of 19 races and finishing nearly 300 points clear in the constructors’ championship.
Matching that, let along surpassing it, is a very tall order and Hamilton expects the competition to be sterner when the new season starts on March 15 in Melbourne.
The 30-year-old British driver says “the more people I get to race (against) the merrier. Bring it on.”
Hackett says more night football to come
ANN ARBOR, Mich.
Jim Hackett says there will be more night football at Michigan Stadium next season, and the Wolverines’ interim athletic director says he’s enjoyed working with new coach Jim Harbaugh since hiring him about a month ago.
Hackett was at Michigan’s basketball game at Michigan State on Sunday, and he said an announcement of at least one night football game will come soon. Hackett has not said publicly exactly how long he wants to stay on as the athletic director, but he says his wife has encouraged him to stay “a little longer” if he wants to.
Hackett took over at the start of November after Dave Brandon resigned. He hired Harbaugh in late December.
Auburn dismisses senior Muhammad
COLLEGE STATION, Texas
Auburn coach Terri Williams-Flournoy has dismissed senior forward Hasina Muhammad from the team.
Muhammad had been scheduled to return Sunday after serving a two-game suspension for fighting with Alabama’s Breanna Hayden during a game.
But Williams-Flournoy cited violation of unspecified team rules for the decision, saying Tigers “student-athletes have to be held accountable for the choices they make.” Auburn announced the dismissal just before Auburn played at No. 12 Texas A&M.
Muhammad played in 19 games this season, starting four. She averaged 9.1 points per game overall and a team-high 13.7 points in Southeastern Conference games.
Her 169 blocks ranks fifth on Auburn’s career charts, and she’s seventh with 224 steals.
Auburn says Muhammad is on track to graduate in May.
