Write on! Canfield, Howland, S. Range soar at Power of Pen

Canfield Middle School, Howland Middle School, South Range Middle School and Holy Family School took top honors Saturday in the 2015 Power of the Pen District Tournament at South Range Middle School.
Power of the Pen is an interscholastic writing competition among students and school teams statewide.
Winners of Saturday’s competition advance to the regional contest at Malone University in Canton on Feb. 28.
About 120 seventh- and eight-graders from 11 schools in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Cuyahoga counties participated in Saturday’s daylong event, which featured a series of three rounds of 40-minute essay-writing contests.
Grade seven school results from Saturday are, first place, Canfield Village Middle School, Mahoning County; second place, South Range Middle School, Mahoning County; third place, Howland Middle School, Trumbull County; and fourth place, Whitney M. Young School, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County.
Grade eight school results are, first place, Canfield Middle School; second place, Howland Middle School; third place, Holy Family School, Poland; and fourth place, West Branch Middle School, Mahoning County.
Grade seven individual contestant results are, first place, Olivia Rhodehamel, South Range Middle School; second place, Addie Flowers, South Range Middle School; third place, Grace Strodtbeck, Howland Middle School; fourth place, Connor Fuchs, Canfield Village Middle School; and fifth place, Stephen VanSuch, St. Charles School.
Grade eight contestant results are, first place, Theresa Wasylchy, Canfield Village Middle School; second place, Chloe Housteau, Holy Family School; third place, Jennifer Kandray, St. Charles School; fourth place, Kristina Pazzelli, West Branch Middle School; and fifth place Camryn Sutton, West Branch Middle School.
South Range teacher Karen Rast served as coordinator for the district tournament.
