Negro League player is topic of new book
NEW CASTLE, PA.
Former New Castle Indians player Ted Toles Jr. and the author of his life story, Michael T. Swank, will appear at a book signing from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence County Historical Society, 408 North Jefferson St.
The book is “The Life and Times of Negro League Player Ted Toles Jr.”
Toles’ story begins in New Castle, where he played for the New Castle Indians in 1951. From there, he traveled to the sandlots of Ohio and on to Canada, where he played with some of the biggest names in sports.
This book follows his career, which includes multiple Hall of Fame inductions, reunions with teammates and long overdue recognition.

Author Michael Swank is from Painesville, Ohio. His passion for sports began at an early age and evolved into a focus on baseball and the history of the game.
He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research and has been published in multiple regional magazines.
Best-seller will be book group’s focus

The book “Light Between Oceans” by M.L. Stedman will be discussed at the Feb. 24 meeting of the Adult Book Discussion Group, which will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. in the library’s Quaker Room at 821 E. State St.
The book, a New York Times best-seller, is a story of two people, Tom and Isabel, as they build their lives as caretakers of an isolated lighthouse off the coast of Australia. Their attempts to add a child to their lives prove unsuccessful until a strange turn of events brings them face to face with hard choices between right and wrong and love and loss.
The Adult Book Discussion Group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month and is open to the public. Registration is not necessary.
