Mooney Hall of Fame event set for Feb. 15

Cardinal Mooney will host their 23rd Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 15 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. A buffet dinner will be served between 6 p.m and 7 p..m and the induction program will begin promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets for the event are $75 per person and are available at the school office. All proceeds from the event benefit the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund established by the Stoops family to provide scholarships who attend Cardinal Mooney High School.

Fourteen athletes will be inducted this year including: Candace Barak ’99 (tennis/soccer), Brian Cicuto ’74 (football), Andy DeNiro ’97 (football), Robert (R.C.) Jones ’92 (football), Sandy Ketchem (significant contributions), Patrick Kiraly ’79 (football), Sozon Lyras ’98 (golf), Taryn Papalia ’95 (soccer), Jeff Rich ’99 (football), Justin Rogers ’98 (soccer), Ralph Sandine ’91 (basketball), Jessica Taylor ’99 (softball), David Vecchione ’96 (football), and Monica Vicarel ’97 (basketball).

Penguins have multiple winners in dual victory

Madison Aranda, Viktoria Orosz and Ashley Dow combined to win seven events as the YSU swimming and diving team defeated Saint Francis 158-125 on Saturday at the Beeghly Natatorium. Orosz led the squad with three first-place finishes in freestyle events. The freshman won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:53.66. She later took first in the 100 free with a time of 53.10 seconds and concluded a strong meet with a time of 5:05.29 in the 500 free.

Aranda won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:36.70 and took first in the 200-yard butterfly clocking in at 2:09.30. She was impressive in the 1,000 taking first place by 51 seconds. In the 200 fly she was first by 3.47. Additionally, she was second in the 400-yard IM at 4:39.36.

Dow earned first-place finishes in the 100-yard back at 59.07 seconds and the 200 back at 2:12.26. She was first in the 100 by 2:23 seconds and won the 200 by 8.44 seconds. She was also second in the 100 butterfly at 1:00.18.

Ron Potesta to speak at Curbstone luncheon

Sports Animal 1390 radio talk show host, Ron Potesta, will be the guest speaker tomorrow at the weekly luncheon of the Curbstone Coaches at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in the Wedgewood Plaza in Austintown. The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

OSU lowers prices for 2 non-conference games

Ohio State is lowering the football ticket price for two non-conference games next season, but tickets for games against Penn State and Michigan State will be more than $100.

The school says tickets for games against Hawaii and Western Michigan will drop from $79 to $65.

Tickets for the Penn State game will be $125 and the price for the Michigan State tickets will be $150.

The three other homes games against Northern Illinois, Maryland and Minnesota will be priced at $79.

Ohio State began charging a premium for marque games in 2013, but this is the first time the university has cut prices under its new ticketing plan. Ohio State led the nation in attendance last year, averaging 106,000 fans.

Registration begins for Police and Fire Games

Registration is now open for The 2015 Ohio Police and Fire Games which will be held in the Mahoning Valley from June 14-19.

The 2015 Games will be hosted by the Mahoning Valley Chiefs of Police Association. Carl Frost, Chief of Police of Beaver Township, will serve as the overall coordinator.

Proceeds generated from this week-long event are channeled to several charities.
