Bond set for man accused in beating

YOUNGSTOWN

Bond was set at $50,000 Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court for a man accused of forcing his way into a Bott Street home early Sunday evening and beating a 64-year-old woman inside with a hammer.

Timothy Smith, 36, was arraigned before Magistrate Anthony Sertick on charges of felonious assault and aggravated burglary, which put the woman in the hospital, said Assistant City Prosecutor Jeffrey Moliterno. Police said the victim is Smith’s aunt.

Smith was arrested Monday by U.S. marshals at the Western Reserve Transit Authority bus station on West Federal Street.

Mahoning official’s father dies at 87

POLAND

Samuel Traficanti, 87, of Poland, father of Mahoning County Commissioner Anthony Traficanti, died Tuesday evening in the Cleveland Clinic.

A Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1125 Turin Ave., Youngstown.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Rossi and Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, where a prayer service will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday.

A World War II Navy veteran, he owned two Youngstown-area City Service gas stations before founding the North Lima trucking company bearing his name, which later became B & T Express Inc.

Assault charges

HUBBARD

A man faces a misdemeanor charge of assault after a fight Tuesday evening at Michael’s Bar on North Main Street.

Leo Kosmo, 35, of Hubbard is alleged by police to have punched a 43-year-old man in the face. Witnesses told police the two men were going to play pool and that the punch was unprovoked, according to a police report. Officers found a knife under a throw rug near where the fight took place.

Damage to car windows probed

GIRARD

Police are investigating a series of broken car windows reported Wednesday. An East Second Street resident reported that his car’s rear window had been shattered. Officers found a marble near the scene, which may have been shot through the window with a sling shot, according to a police report.

Officers found another car, also parked on East Second, with a broken rear window, and a car parked on East Howard Street with a broken driver’s-side window.

Fund board votes to allocate grants

BROOKFIELD

The Strimbu Memorial Fund board of directors voted to disburse grant allocations to local economic-development and charitable organizations and individuals in need totaling nearly $130,000.

Along with individuals in need, grants were awarded to American Red Cross of Mercer County; American Red Cross Lake to River Chapter, Northeast Ohio Region; Beatitude House; Community Food Warehouse; Community Library of the Shenango Valley; Joshua’s Haven; Military Affairs of Northeast Ohio; Penn-Northwest Development Corp.; Prince of Peace Center; Salvation Army; United Way of Mercer County; Community Food Warehouse; Meals on Wheels Shenango Valley, Trumbull County and Mahoning County; Rotary Club of Sharon; Shop with a Cop Program; Hope Center for Arts & Technology; and West Hill Ministries.
