Associated Press video- game critic Lou Kesten’s favorite titles of the year featured monster hunters, treasure hunters, guardian spirits and murder suspects:
1. “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” a fearlessly weird sword-and-sorcery drama about a jaded monster hunter and his impetuous adopted daughter.
2. “Fallout 4,” a haunting epic of a post-nuclear America that veers from hilarious black comedy to heartbreaking tragedy.
3. “Super Mario Maker,” in which Nintendo gives its fans all the tools they need to design their own Mario levels.
4. “Ori and the Blind Forest,” a melancholy yet action-packed adventure that’s the year’s most beautiful game.
5. “Her Story,” a nifty murder mystery anchored by a knockout performance by actress Viva Seifert.
6. “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” highlighted by clever puzzles that work the brain cells more than reflexes.
7. “Pillars of Eternity,” a loving tribute to old-school role-playing games like “Baldur’s Gate.”
8. “Undertale,” a lo-fi project that urges you to negotiate with monsters rather than kill them.
9. “Rock Band 4,” the long-awaited return of the ultimate party game.
10. “Until Dawn,” a slasher thriller that twists all the familiar gimmicks into something perversely original.
