Homeowner scares off robber

YOUNGSTOWN

A 38-year-old South Side woman told police she scared off an armed robber late Monday with her own handgun.

Officers were called at 10:35 p.m. to a home in the 200 block of East Philadephia Avenue, where the woman told them she was in her garage loading her car for work when a man appeared with a handgun and said he wanted her to give him “everything you have.”

The woman told the robber she has a concealed weapon permit and she had a gun in her pocket. Reports said the woman took a step toward the robber and took a gun out of her pocket and the robber ran away. The woman then fired three shots at him, reports said.

Reports said officers found three spent shell casings in the area. Police searched for the purported robber but could not find him, and no local hospitals reported anyone being treated for a gunshot wound.

Extra patrols

BOARDMAN

The township police department will supplement its regular patrols with high-visibility enforcement New Year’s Eve and over the holiday weekend.

Police will target violators for aggressive, distracted and impaired driving as well as for seat-belt violations.

“If we suspect someone is driving while drunk or impaired, our officers are prepared to make an arrest so as to keep our roads safe,” the department said in a release.

Police recommend that those who will drink over the holiday plan an alternate way to get home, such as designating a sober driver or calling a taxi. The department also asks people to contact law enforcement if they observe a suspected impaired driver on the road.
