SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.
Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott was cited by the Columbus police on Sunday for a car accident before he departed for Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl, according to Franklin County court records.
Elliott, who was cited for driving under suspension, driving without a license and failure to control, met with the media in Arizona on Tuesday and explained his side of the story.
“First and foremost, I wasn’t aware that my license was suspended. And I’m doing everything I can now -- well, my dad is doing everything he can -- to get that handled and to get my license back in good standing.”
Elliott said he was rushing to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to get his bags on the team bus when the accident occurred.
“The weather was just terrible and I hydroplaned, lost control of my car and it was a bad situation,” said Elliott, who also didn’t have his driver’s license on him during interactions with the police after the accident. “I lost my wallet. I didn’t have my license with me, but I had my passport on me. I still had photo ID, I just didn’t have my license on me.”
